Woman tied up and set alight

A young woman who was tied to a chair, doused with flammable liquid and set alight remains in a critical condition this morning after sustaining burns to more than half her body.

Firefighters were called to a unit in Brinkley Street, Cannington, about 11.30am yesterday after neighbours noticed smoke coming from the property.

Det-Sgt Matt Atkinson said: "When firefighters arrived there was an active fire in the premises and they immediately started dousing those fires, they started searching the premises and they located the woman in one of the bedrooms.

"She was suffering burns and as a result of those burns she was conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital."

The woman underwent surgery yesterday to stabilise her condition and she remains in an induced coma. She had deep tissue burns to up to 60 per cent of her body.

Police said that the forensic examination of the unit had only started late in the afternoon.

Detectives have identified a number of persons of interest, including people well-known to the victim.

They were also investigating reports that neighbours heard a dispute at or near the property.

"Predominantly the complex is inhabited by students and at this stage we are undertaking inquiries with the people who live in that complex to see if they can provide us with any details to assist us with our inquiries," Det-Sgt Atkinson said.

"There is no history of domestic violence at this address.

Neighbour Robert Fleming said he noticed a strong smell of smoke late yesterday morning and soon afterwards the street was filled with firefighters and police.

He said he had never noticed any trouble at the block of units where the fire started. "It is always very quiet there," Mr Fleming said.

Another neighbour, Andrew Bunko, said he noticed smoke coming from a unit towards the rear of the complex.
