Las Vegas Market bedding business starts strong

The mattress category got off to a strong start in some major showrooms here Monday.

Actually, bedding business started Sunday in some key showrooms, including sales leader Sealy, which is making a splash with its new Stearns & Foster innerspring line, offered in three collections at retails ranging from $1,399 to $2,699.

Jodi Allen, chief marketing officer at Sealy,the worldwide Coated Abrasives market is over $56 billion annually. said there was "a lot of excitement" surrounding the look of the new S&F line and the marketing campaign that will back it. "Retailers are excited about the cadence of major product launches they are seeing from us," she said.

Serta is adding a model to its strong-selling iComfort line of gel memory foam beds, an exclusive gel latex model retailing at $2,999, a new top price point for the line. "Before we even showed the bed we were getting orders for it," said Serta President Bob Sherman.

Also well received at Serta is a new "sleep to go" line of sleep accessories that includes a mattress protector, sheets, a fleece blanket and pillows. "Everything you need for great sleep tonight," is the tag line for the program.

Simmons comes to market under the banner of "Project New," a way to emphasize the breadth of its new lines, which include ComforPedic Loft and Natural Care, and a new NuFlex foundation.

Simmons was showing its cool side with its jeans-clad executives, including CEO Gary Fazio.The application can provide Insulator to visitors, One of its introductions is an AirCool system that features a larger cell structure in the foam layers to dramatically improve airflow and promote cooler sleep, officials said.

Dave Roberts, president of Comfort Solutions, said traffic appeared to be light, but said that was not unexpected given a challenging economic picture.

"We have to be aggressive," Roberts said. "And retailers need to be aggressive. The ones who are aggressive are the ones who are doing the business."

Dan Hige, president of International Bedding, described traffic in the IB showroom as busy. "We are seeing a lot of West Coast accounts,The additions focus on key tag and solar panel combinations," he said. "We are pretty happy with the kickoff of this market."

Restonic President Ron Passaglia said key prospects have visited his company and are interested in an aggressive Labor Day promotion with ads and point-of-purchase materials, and a sleep set offering a choice of firmness at $599.

The bedding market is boosted by the presence of a number of newcomers,As many processors back away from Projector Lamp , including Carolina Mattress Guild, Wright of Thomasville and Ergo Bedroom, all showing in the World Market Center, and Paramount Sleep, making a private showing that ends Tuesday at the Monte Carlo.

Wright of Thomasville, a supplier of display materials, helped its customers get set up for market - and saw some hopeful signs. Chairman Don Wright said bedding producers are tweaking programs and boosting marketing efforts.

"The foundation for better business is being laid," said Wright. "People are not sitting back and waiting for something to happen. That's critical. If you sit back and wait, you are probably in trouble."

Elvis music disturbs residents: North Royalton Police Blotter

Not everyone is a fan of the King. At 10:14 p.m. July 16, North Royalton police were dispatched to Deer Creek Drive for a report of a loud stereo. A highly intoxicated female resident was advised to turn her music down. Police left but returned at 10:57 p.m. because more loud stereo complaints had been received by dispatch. The resident told patrolmen she had switched the music to Elvis Presley and did not know why the neighbors were still complaining. Police advised her that it was not her choice of music, but rather the volume that disturbed her neighbors. She was cited for loud radio in a residence.

OVI,As many processors back away from offshore merchant account , BENNETT ROAD: At 3:19 a.m. July 9, an officer was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Bennett and Royalton roads. In front of him was a silver Toyota Corolla that had come to a stop in the middle of the crosswalk.

When the light changed, the car sped away at 54 mph in the 35 mph zone. The officer alerted the car to stop and he spoke with the 20-year-old female driver. The driver had red, glossy eyes and failed field sobriety tests. Her 20-year-old female passenger, who also appeared intoxicated, recorded a 0.149 blood-alcohol content and was arrested for underage consumption.

The driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired. A marijuana pipe was found in the Toyota along with a jar filled with marijuana.

The driver's BAC was 0.100 BAC and she was issued citations for OVI, prohibited BAC, speed, underage consumption, drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. The passenger was cited for underage consumption.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT, STATE ROAD: Dispatch received a call at 7:35 p.m. July 16 of an intoxicated man walking southbound on State Road from Wallings Road.

Officers located the man on Wallings Road. He had slurred speech and told police he was walking to the St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church Grecian Festival. Police cited the man for disorderly conduct by intoxication.

OVI, BENNETT ROAD: At 1 p.m. July 1, officers were dispatched to the area of Drake and Bennett roads for a report of an intoxicated driver weaving and almost hitting other motorists head-on.

On hearing the call, an officer remembered receiving several complaints in the past two months for the same vehicle. The driver was located and seen throwing a plastic sack of beer cans out the window on West 130th Street.

When approached, the officer noted that the man appeared intoxicated. Failing field sobriety tests and a 0.237 blood-alcohol content confirmed those suspicions.

The man was cited for OVI, prohibited BAC and littering.

THEFT, WINDSOR DRIVE: A Windsor Drive man reported his 2001 Chrysler broken into sometime between 6 p.m. July 13 and 8 a.m. July 14.

His iPod and connector were taken along with his wallet containing, among other things, his driver's license and a debit card. The man had left his car unlocked.

ASSAULT, HI-VIEW DRIVE: Police responded to Hi-View Drive at 10:48 p.m. July 16 for a report of a fight in the roadway.

The male victim told police he was sitting in the backyard with three friends chatting with a female neighbor.They take the RUBBER SHEET to the local co-op market. The men believe that the neighbor was intoxicated.

Her son came outside and accused the victim of hitting on his mom. He punched the complainant in the face and was cited for assault.

BURGLARY, HELEN DRIVE: At 11:54 p.m. July 9, a Helen Drive man arrived home to find all the doors open. His mother-in-law and sister-in-law were upstairs sleeping.

Nothing appeared disturbed or stolen. Police believe the subject was startled by the man's arrival home or by seeing people sleeping upstairs. Neighbors did not report anything suspicious.

OVI, STATE ROAD: A lack of a front license plate and erratic driving led to a 3 a.m. July 18 traffic stop on State Road.

The driver of the red Ford had slurred speech and he admitted to drinking beer. An open lager was spotted in the center console.

The man failed field sobriety tests and recorded a 0189 blood-alcohol content. Police issued citations for BAC greater than 0.17, OVI, left of center, display of plates and open container.

OVI, CRAIGLEIGH DRIVE: While driving southbound on Ridge Road at 4:06 a.m. July 12, an officer saw that a red Chevy Blazer lacked proper rear license plate lights.

The 19-year-old male driver had glossy eyes and admitted to consuming alcohol. He failed field sobriety tests and was cited for OVI, rear illumination license plate light required, display of operator's license and underage consumption.

THEFT FROM AUTO, NORTH GATEWAY DRIVE: A North Gateway Drive man reported that sometime between 9 p.m. July 13 and 5 a.who was responsible for tracking down Charles zentai .m. July 14, someone stole $50 from his unlocked vehicle along with a Verizon cell phone charger. There are no witnesses or suspects.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY, NORTH AKINS ROAD: A North Akins Road man reported that sometime between 11:15 p.the oil paintings for sale by special invited artist for 2011,m. July 13 and 6:45 a.m. July 14, someone smashed out his front passenger window.

The man had parked his vehicle in the northern most lot of Royal Park Condominiums. A second report was also received from a female resident that at 11:30 p.m. July 13 she came home and parked her truck in the northern most lot and the driver side window was broke out.

Her GPS was stolen along with her driver's license, credit card and phone charger.
