Religious practices are not all ethical

The practice of circumcision is condoned in the Bible and believed by several religious denominations to be one of the most important rituals performed during an individual’s lifetime. But outside of a religious context, oral-penile contact from an adult man to a child is considered pedophilia and is punishable by law.

Because the contact in question occurred within a religious context, Fischer has not been held accountable for the death of the baby boys.

Jerry Schmetterer, the spokesman for Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes, told The Jewish Week that, “Our Crimes Against Children Bureau is looking into this situation. I would not assume what any possible charges would be.”

I can think of a few possible charges, Mr. Hynes. How about two counts of criminal homicide? Several counts of child molestation? Tortious transmission of an STD by intentional neglect? The behavior of this priest is abominable to any right-minded person, but according to The Jewish Week, the city only filed a legal complaint against Fischer to compel him to stop engaging in the practice after the death of the first baby. 'Surfing Madonna' Artist Says Mosaic Not Religious

Partially as a result of the comments, the Attorney General's Office refused to allow the piece to be featured at Moonlight State Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation did not want to comment on the mural, but instead shared with 10News the response it initially gave to Patterson about his proposed location.

The Surfing Madonna first appeared under a railroad bridge in Encinitas on Good Friday last year, but was declared graffiti by city officials and removed two months later, at a loss of approximately $6,000 for Patterson.

Police charge teen in fatal shooting

James Chambers spent all of Saturday cleaning up from an overnight break-in and ransacking at his business and a neighboring one on West Franklin Boulevard.

Author Emilie P. Bush isn't shy about saying her latest book, "Her Majesty's Explorer," meant to get your little one's cogs and wheels turning, is the world's first steampunk bedtime story. The illustrated children's book, which released last Tuesday and jumped to No. 1 in Amazon's "Hot New Releases," follows the adventures of automaton St. John Murphy Alexander and his not-so-rubber ducky, Steamduck.

Already the author of two adult steampunk novels, Bush is also the mother of two young daughters -- whom she calls her "built-in focus group." When she went to a steampunk panel for young adult literature at Dragon*Con last year, all of the authors agreed on one thing: "What is missing in the steampunk genre is there are no picture books," Bush remembers them saying. "I was already working on this and thinking, 'finally, I have found a niche before somebody else!' "

Together, Bush and her illustrator, William Kevin Petty,Distributes and manufactures RUBBER SHEET, have an original children's book that caters to a specific subculture. But the charming concept wasn't always easy. Petty is an Army officer and was stationed in Kuwait and Iraq during the process. Bush: I wanted to work with Kevin! Gosh, he has such talent. In relationships, the best ones are where each half thinks they got the better end of the deal, and that's the kind of thing we have. We get on like a house on fire. Together, we have lots of plans. That's why we did the bedtime story. He said, "Let's work together, but I don't know what we should do," and I went through his images and found one of the mechanical man.

I wrote this story about him being an explorer and sent it to Kevin, and he sent me back some drawings. For a man who has no children, he understands kids really well. Bush: He sent me a message on Facebook! He had started drawing these pictures overseas, and like so many of us that come to steampunk, he showed them around and people said, "You draw steampunk," and he said, "What's steampunk?" He went tooling around the Internet, discovering what steampunk was. He found my book and sent me some fan art of ["Chenda and the Airship] Brofman." I thought, "This guy has the talent of an artist and the discipline of a soldier, he gets the job done." He was halfway around the world, and we were well into the project and talking all the time on Facebook. By the time we finally met, we knew each other really well!

It was a testament to his character that he could still be thinking about these really charming drawings while he was soaking in man's inhumanity to man. He had some pretty rotten days in Iraq, yet he could still be thinking about these charming things. That's one of the most remarkable things about Kevin.

Bush: Steamduck was one of the things he sent before going to Iraq. The interesting thing about children's books is they're meant for children to read, but adults pick them out and buy the books. The things that I liked best about books when I was a kid were the ones that I could go through myself, even when I couldn't read, and have some activity with. Like Richard Scarry's stories, where he has very detailed pictures and he would hide the Goldbug in many of his pictures. I would go and look for the Goldbugs and see if I could find them.

When we went about creating the book, the first thing I did was I wrote the book in a circle because kids love to do things over and over again. The story of St. John Murphy Alexander starts with him marching for queen and country, coming home, following his duty and going to bed, without a fuss. And when he finally falls asleep, he dreams about exploring for the queen and country, so it takes you right back to the beginning of the story again.

The other thing was, I said to Kevin, let's put little things in the pictures so when we get to the end, we can have a little seek-and-find page. The idea is parents will read this to the kids, leave the book with them, and they'll go back and look at the pictures again. Steamduck was the first of those. I loved Steamduck so much, I said, "We can market around Steamduck because he is adorable and kids get duckies." We started saying, "Looking for Steamduck? You will be." Joseph Lizzadro, an electrical contractor living in Elmhurst in the 1940s, was a rock hound who loved to cut and polish jade. But his extensive collection, which would eventually found the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, was largely an accident.

Lizzadro was looking for rough jade to cut into jewelry, but the stone was tough to come by. Already carved jade, however, was relatively cheap and easy to find, and other lapidaries often bought carvings and repurposed them.

“Mr. Lizzadro wrote away for some jade and was just amazed at what he got,All RUBBER MATS is comprised of all types of mats,” said Dorothy Asher,Injection molding and Plastic molding supplier， the museum’s director and Lizzadro’s granddaughter. The piece, a jade container for ceremonial liquids from the Qing dynasty, was so stunning, Asher says, that Lizzadro couldn’t bear to break it apart. About a third of the collection is Chinese sculptures, carvings and ceremonial vessels, including a stone teapot used for rice wine. One of the most impressive pieces is a blue jade incense burner used in the Imperial Palace in Beijing and signed by Emperor Qianlong, from the Qing dynasty. The 3-foot-tall burner, in the shape of a pagoda, is the biggest piece in the collection, Asher says.

One of the museum’s centerpieces is known as the the Castle Lizzadro, commissioned in in memory of Chris Lizzadro, founder Joseph’s grandson and son of John Lizzadro, currently the museum’s executive director. Chris was 13 when he drowned in a health club pool in 1982.

The castle, by English sculptor William Toliday, is an intricate work of 18-karat gold, diamond, malachite and other stones. John asked Toliday to make the castle because Chris loved the “mythology of knights,” said Asher, who was Chris’ cousin.

“It’s one of the children’s favorites because they can look at it for a long time and see something new every time—miniature cannons on the castle walls, a grotto, an underground cave where boats go,” Asher said. “You can daydream all day about it.”

7-month-old treated for kidney stones

Seven-month-old Rahul Shankar is possibly one of the youngest to have undergone a kidney stone removal procedure in the city. While he had a strong history of stones in his family, experts are witnessing an overwhelming increase of kidney stone incidence in the paediatric age group, irrespective of genetic causes.

Turkey Day marks the end of farm season in Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Three hundred families in Northeast Ohio are sitting down today to feast on pasture-raised turkeys from Brunty Farm in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Just six days ago, these big birds -- weighing between eight and 30 pounds -- flocked freely through Brunty's rolling meadows, flapping white wings, pecking in thick grasses and nervously gobbling at the approach of a curious house cat or a low hovering hawk.

By Monday, they were a pile of raw carcasses, plucked, gutted, bagged, labeled and iced right there on the farm, waiting to be picked up by pre-paying, Turkey Day customers.

"Every Thanksgiving, I say, 'Thank God it's over,' " Jeff Brunty said last week. "And I wonder why I'm crazy enough to do it all again.A long established toolmaking and trade Injection moulds company."

Today marks the end of the nine-month farming season for Brunty, 25, and his partner, Melanie Schenk, 24. They still have about 100 turkeys and 600 chickens to butcher for Christmas customers.

Now it's time to unwind and get ready for a vacation in the Florida Keys, where they've rented an oceanfront home for the month of January. Brunty's brother, Dave, will watch the farm.

"We'll get to relax and enjoy life for the next few months," said Jeff Brunty, noting he has been working 100 to 120 hours a week since March when the season started. "This job can really run you down."

Brunty and Schenk are finishing their third season as farmers on 17 acres of federal park land leased from the government for 60 years.

They are among 11 farmers in the park using environmentally sustainable methods that are healthy for the land, the animals and the consumers.

The farms are a project of the Countryside Conservancy, a nonprofit group in partnership with the national park to bring back family farms in the Cuyahoga Valley.

At the end of the 19th century there were about 800 farms between Cleveland and Akron, many of which were in the 22-mile-long Cuyahoga Valley.

By the middle of the 20th century, the farms were gone, casualties of land developers and giant agribusinesses.

But since developers could not encroach into the national park, the land is the same as it was a century ago. Twelve years ago, the Conservancy began resurrecting ruins of old farms on the protected reservation and offering them to people committed to working the land.

Two more -- one 26 acres, the other 31 -- are currently being offered, which will bring next year's number to 13. The Conservancy has also created farmers' markets in the region.

"Our hope is that Northeast Ohio is going to become a region that has a lot of farming and a lot of food entrepreneurs," said Conservancy director Darwin Kelsey,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, noting that Northeast Ohio spends $8.5 billion on food each year, but only 1 to 2 percent of that is grown locally.

Last Saturday, Schenk and the two Brunty brothers prepared for their annual marathon turkey butchering, a three-day event that begins on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

They have been up since dawn working chore after chore and now at dusk, the trio, joined by their border collie, Riley, slowly begin herding the flock from a pasture to a makeshift pen next to a big shed by the house.

With leaf rakes, they nudge the confused birds into the pen where they eventually settle down for their last night.

It's calm now on the farm. A distant howl of a coyote can be heard in the night air. Brunty's big dog, Keona, a Great Pyrenees, will keep watch all night, guarding the flock from predators.
