On March 6, Palin used twitter to urge Obama to back up his calls for civility by returning Maher’s $1 million donation. “Why doesn’t his super PAC return the $1 million that he got from a rabid misogynist?” she asked.
Since then, other Democrats, such as former White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee, have criticized Maher’s comments.
“As a general matter, obviously language that denigrates women is inappropriate,” Carney said today, without criticizing Maher or other liberal commentators who have insulted women.
Obama “chooses to, in the pursuit of a more civil discourse in our public space he chooses to try to practice that civility by himself and he calls on everyone to do just that,” said Carney.
However, Obama declined to criticize Maher during a Mar. 6 White House press conference when TheDC asked about the TV comedian’s comments.
After calling for civility during the Mar. 8 press conference, Carney also accused GOP leaders of being irresponsible for trying to fast-track a law that would allow construction of a new oil pipeline, and suggested that unnamed Republicans are urging war against Iran.

Clark accepts a friendly scratch on his well-groomed head and then trots off into the showroom full of repurposed furniture and original art. His furry face serves as the logo of his masters’ company, but the fame doesn’t seem to have gone to his head.
“He’s a working class dog,” laughs Chris Hagen, who owns Inherent Design Laboratory (or i.d. Lab for short) in the West Midtown Design District with his partner Adam Stewart. “We made him the logo in the hopes we could write off his haircuts.”

A mold dispute in Albany’s public housing
Nine years ago, when Ara Powell moved into her townhouse, she felt like she’d won the lottery. But Steven Longo, executive director at the authority, insists there’s no evidence that water from the exterior is sneaking past the plastic that separates the buildings’ plywood and insulation from interior drywall. Moisture problems in Powell’s unit, he says, were caused by a specific combination of factors that included poor overall ventilation, an overpacked closet and a leaky window.
“We have moisture (problems) on the outside,” Longo said. “But that doesn’t translate into mold within the units, according to all of the testing that we’ve done.”
Longo adds that any moisture issues within North Albany Homes units result from tenant behavior. To change that, he says, the authority has begun an education campaign to instruct residents on the need for proper ventilation and fan use. It has also asked tenants to sign a lease addendum that requires them to minimize “the occurrence and growth of mold” and “promptly notify management” in the event of its persistent growth.
But doesn’t such a lease stipulation suggest that the complex does, indeed, have a mold problem?

Artists have not completely rejected cast-plastic and cardboard, but these types of mixed media are frequently considered to be a lower-class form of art. Certain factions of the artistic world praise such works, but many critics bemoan this alleged “fall” of the artistic form from its historic pedestal. Burckhardt focuses on the middle ground between these two attitudes. Burckhardt has seen the life cycle of painting occur many times over and he seems to show amusement in the face of its repeated death and resurrection. The hazy distortions of Burckhardt’s paintings seem to dismiss the existence of previous works of the more academic artistic canon.

NPD Solarbuzz expects PV equipment suppliers’ 2012 revenues
A broad range of PV equipment suppliers are expected to have reported record revenues for 2011, after a year of continued capacity expansions. However, this situation will be contrasted by significant cut-back in capital expenditure in 2012 as the PV industry struggles with overcapacity and falling prices, according to the latest NPD Solarbuzz PV Equipment Quarterly report.
With a significant focus on capacity expansions in China and Taiwan, NPD Solarbuzz noted that Asia-based equipment suppliers benefited greatly, often at the expense of Western-based firms with a long-standing history within the industry.
“The euphoria of announcing record revenues for 2011 is countered by the realization that much of the tooling shipped last year was stimulated by highly ambitious capacity expansion plans that were not underpinned by market demand,” noted Finlay Colville, senior analyst at NPD Solarbuzz. “Over-capacity reached chronic proportions across the c-Si value-chain during 2011 and only stronger than anticipated end-market demand in 2012 will mitigate a painful and severe equipment spending downturn.”
The market research firm highlights Japan-based wire-saw producer, Komatsu-NTC and an emerging group of Chinese tool suppliers that included (Fujian) Apollo, 48th Research Institute , Jinggong and Jingyuntong (JYT), which saw revenue grow significantly in 2011.
Collectively, the four Chinese companies noted by NPD Solarbuzz, posted a CAGR metric in excess of 200% for PV-specific equipment revenues covering the period from 2008 to 2011.

Currently, Colville sees little for equipment suppliers to be optimistic about regarding 2012 business opportunities, though he noted that changes in the c-Si equipment road map point firmly to an increase in high-efficiency cell variants, with over 75% of capacity added during 2012, capable of producing panels with efficiency gains of 0.5% or more, compared to industry averages through 2011.

The market research firm highlights Japan-based wire-saw producer, Komatsu-NTC and an emerging group of Chinese tool suppliers that included (Fujian) Apollo, 48th Research Institute , Jinggong and Jingyuntong (JYT), which saw revenue grow significantly in 2011.

Beyond its brick shop in Harrison, the plaster manufacturing
It’s an unassuming brick workshop tucked away near the Passaic River, but for decades the industrial corner of Harrison has been home to Plaque Art Creations, one of the country’s few remaining plaster manufacturers and retail outlets.
The family-run business designs, makes and sells over 5,000 different plaster designs.
“I was born into it, so for me it’s like I popped out of a mold,” said Belinda Kalthoff, 47, who runs the business with her mother Minerva “Minnie” Marquez, 74.
Inside, busts of Shakespeare, Buddha, Chopin, Ben Franklin and Mozart share shelf space with rows of cats, dragons and Greek statues. There’s a Christmas corner, neatly arranged rows of picture frames and Egyptian statues, all neatly arranged and categorized. The store’s German Shepherd, Quincy, rumbles past tiny statues of bulldogs and poodles.
Every day, employees take bags of dry plaster powder, liquefy it, and pour it into molds. Then after some cleaning, they dry for two days, and go on shelves.

Woman tied up and set alight
A young woman who was tied to a chair, doused with flammable liquid and set alight remains in a critical condition this morning after sustaining burns to more than half her body.
Firefighters were called to a unit in Brinkley Street, Cannington, about 11.30am yesterday after neighbours noticed smoke coming from the property.
The 29-year-old Chinese woman,An Air purifier is a device which removes contaminants from the air. who was living in working in Perth, was restrained with cable ties and had a blanket draped over her head before she was doused with an accelerant - possibly petrol - and set on fire.
Kensington detectives questioned a man over the incident last night but released him without charge at 8.15am today.I have just spent two weeks shopping for tile and have discovered China Porcelain tile.
Det-Sgt Matt Atkinson said: "When firefighters arrived there was an active fire in the premises and they immediately started dousing those fires, they started searching the premises and they located the woman in one of the bedrooms.
"She was suffering burns and as a result of those burns she was conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital."
The woman underwent surgery yesterday to stabilise her condition and she remains in an induced coma. She had deep tissue burns to up to 60 per cent of her body.
Police said that the forensic examination of the unit had only started late in the afternoon.
Detectives have identified a number of persons of interest, including people well-known to the victim.
They were also investigating reports that neighbours heard a dispute at or near the property.
"Predominantly the complex is inhabited by students and at this stage we are undertaking inquiries with the people who live in that complex to see if they can provide us with any details to assist us with our inquiries," Det-Sgt Atkinson said.
"There is no history of domestic violence at this address.

Neighbour Robert Fleming said he noticed a strong smell of smoke late yesterday morning and soon afterwards the street was filled with firefighters and police.

"It's amazing what we don't know about light and what there is to learn about its uses. When we realise its true potential, we can use it for a multitude of things that wouldn't come to mind.

Rookwood Pottery out of the fire
For the dozen or so artists and potters at Rookwood Pottery, last Christmas was spent in confusion, pain and uncertainty.
Just days before the holiday of hope and rebirth, the chief executive officer — the man who revived the iconic brand of art pottery after 50 years — was unexpectedly removed and replaced. The 131-year-old Cincinnati institution had failed to meet its financial commitments. Its future was in limbo.
Those talented men and women, many of whom joined the company from cities worldwide, were given the remainder of the year off to heal. They returned in January, led by new chief executive officer Chip DeMois, a former Rookwood consultant and Procter & Gamble executive.
As a fight over Rookwood’s ownership wound its way through the courts last year, DeMois’s team of world-class artists were quietly turning things around. Martin and Marilyn Wade became sole owners of the company in August and agreed to fund its operations through 2012.100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together. But DeMois expects to turn a profit sooner. He’ll grow the company seven-fold in five years; fifteen-fold in 10.
Armed with $1 million from the Wades, DeMois purchased state-of-the-art equipment to boost production. He hired at least 20 new artists, engineers and salespeople.Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, The team published its first catalogue in 100 years to help a new national sales force meet more aggressive targets. In mid-November, they had 17 active restoration projects and commissions – including a $1 million historic tile restoration in Chicago, a new line of cremation urns and a $25,000 custom-made tiled urinal for a Montana ranch.
Martin Wade did not respond to a request for comment on this article. But DeMois said the owners “told me to do good for Cincinnati and have fun. Don’t embarrass us. Make money.”
“Last year was our revival year,” he says. “This next year is really where we’re going to come out and aggressively expand our market.”

In the Glaze Lab at 1920 Race St., glass bottles filled with feldspar, titanium, cobalt and zinc line the wooden shelves.

Rock Creek Canyon Tales
Joe Hernandez leaned his elbows on a picnic table in the Rock Creek Canyon Parkway and lifted his beer for another swallow. It was an overcast November afternoon, and the last of the leaves were still falling from the trees.
He’d watched those trees bud in the spring and saw Twin Falls folks relax under their shade all summer.
The Twin Falls man, dubbed Indian Joe by some of Rock Creek Canyon’s regulars, has frequented the canyon during the past 14 years since the city developed the parkway.
Often spending hours at a time under the trees, Hernandez is a staple of this two-mile trail in the scenic rift that lies between Addison Avenue West and Shoshone Street West — an observer of the people who walk its paved trail, bicycle its hidden hills, or fish its creek. Bedding, old campfires and scattered dishes in a few hidden spots near the trail suggest that people live in the canyon during warmer months.
But this time of year,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, daytime users populate Rock Creek Canyon. They like its seclusion and scenery.
Hernandez has seen some of the trees grow tall over the years.100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together. He pointed to one, its denuded branches protruding from its thick trunk like a punk rocker’s spiked hairdo. A few weeks and many cans of beer earlier, it was covered in leaves.
If you think Rock Creek Canyon is a park that’s accessed just west of the old hospital on Addison Avenue West, you’re only partially right.
As Rock Creek cuts across the south and west sides of town, a canyon-bottom trail stretches from Maxwell Avenue to Blake Street. Hernandez’s canyon hangout is on the south side of Addison. It’s often overlooked, because all that passers-by see from the road are thick trees and a nearby sewer plant.
To find the nearest trailhead, drive to the south end of Blake Street and look for a small parking area to the west. Another access point is near the railroad tracks off Shoshone Street South and Maxwell Avenue.
There are, in fact, four access points for the Maxwell-to-Blake stretch of city-owned parkway, said Dennis Bowyer,which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, director of the Twin Falls Parks and Recreation Department.
The city has owned 46 acres inside the canyon since 1978 but developed the paved pathway only in 1997, building the trail over new sewer lines. The city also installed park benches, picnic tables and trash receptacles. “There’s even a little bit of a sprinkler system in there,” Bowyer said.
Despite the city’s efforts to make this a pleasant place for users, its privacy is both a boon and a burden.
“The good thing about the parkway is that it is secluded,” he said. “But that could also present some problems.”
Usually there aren’t many reports of crime in the canyon, said Luke Allen, crime prevention officer with the Twin Falls Police Department, but more calls come in during summer. “We might find someone shooting at rock chucks down there or something like that,” he said. And graffiti is a problem.
Bowyer doesn’t recommend people walk the parkway alone, though that’s what many seem to do.
Hernandez took a breath and folded his arms Nov. 11,ceramic magic cube for the medical, gazing silently beyond the picnic table.
One by one, people passed him on the trail — some of them jogging, others walking dogs. A man raised his arm, and Hernandez waved back.
“Sure, I know him,” he said. “I know a lot of people here.”
Signs posted along the parkway prohibit overnight camping in the canyon. Visitors must leave by sundown.
That doesn’t always happen, though. During the Times-News’ five-week observations in the canyon in November and early December, people often entered the canyon at sundown as journalists were leaving.

“Did you see the caves?” Donna Anderson asked, gesturing beyond the trail’s end. “People live in those caves.”
During Anderson’s seven years in the house, she said, she has seen people carry baseball bats into the canyon, bicyclists crash and homeless people make camp. She’s tried to help the latter by placing wool blankets and sleeping bags outside. She didn’t like it when, she said, police came and took the items away.
“That kind of bothered me,” she said, adding that she’s not encouraging people to stay in the canyon. But they do it anyway, so why not help them?
“We work with the police,” Bowyer said, noting that his department is in the canyon at least once a week from April to October. “Sometimes we get reports of people camping down there, and we’ll have to go down there and make them leave.”
At times, callers have reported people sleeping beneath Old Towne Bridge, Bowyer said, and city workers have found several obvious campsites deep in the canyon foliage, especially near the trail’s Blake Street end.
“A lot of time we get reports of people living under the trees and we go down there and remove them the best we can,” Allen said. “We tell them this isn’t a park for you to stay and sleep in.” Officers often try to help the campers find other places to stay, he said, but many don’t want the help. “They’re used to that lifestyle and just move on.”
Anderson said she’s seen small, jury-rigged huts made from tumbleweeds and other brush. She doesn’t see as many homeless in Rock Creek Canyon during fall and winter, but her heart goes out to them no matter what time of year.
“I know what it’s like to be homeless,” she said. “I was once homeless myself. It was back when I was a young girl, but I still remember what it was like. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

The West End Front, By Matthew Sweet
On 14 September 1940, 40 demonstrators turned up at the Savoy, demanding tea, bread and butter. They had marched in during an air raid, giving the management the awkward choice of either ejecting them during the bombing or accommodating them to the disapproval of its patrons.
The bootmakers and dockers seeking shelter protested that those bedding down in the Savoy's basement with its "snore warden" and nurses enjoyed superior protection from the Luftwaffe. The East End working class, meanwhile, had no access to any kind of deep shelter. War was a leveller, but during the raids some stayed more level than others.
Matthew Sweet's entertainingly informative The West End Front fields a democratic cast: from crowned heads such as King Zog, paying his bills at the Ritz with gold bullion, to communists like nonagenarian Max Levitas, still resident in Stepney. If, as Sweet suggests, most Home Front histories celebrate a plucky pulling together, using the words 'We" or "Our" in their titles, he has chosen to talk about "Them".
And he's hit on a winner. During the war the Ritz,If so, you may have a cube puzzle . the Savoy, Claridge's, the Dorchester and other less glittering West End hotels got a new leIf any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards,ase of life. Their suites became refuges for exiled European royalty. Statesmen and generals discussed policy in their smoking rooms and sometimes - like Lord Halifax sharing a mistress with Mussolini's London representative - indulged in loose pillow talk. MI5 recruited spies while tapping phones and spying on customers and staff. In the lounges, con men such as Sir Curtis Lampson sold fake commissions. Film stars rubbed shoulders with the "Mayfair Playboys", upper-class criminals supporting themselves as jewel thieves and gun-runners.
It had looked very different when war was declared.I have never solved a Rubik's plastic card . Around 20,000 hotel workers lost their jobs and – more shocking – the Ritz's MD swapped top hat and frock coat for bowler and lounge suit.Initially the banks didn't want our kidney stone . But once the hotels began to trade on the sturdiness of their buildings, things changed. As well as glitz and glamour, the Dorchester's concete roots became a major selling point, as did the Ritz's steel skeleton. The restaurant was now a shelter too, while its Lower Bar offered a thrumming pick-up spot for men who liked a man in uniform. And many did, including the disgraced Tory MP Sir Paul Latham with his artificial leg and taste for gunners.
So, as their staff exchanged livery for uniforms, the rich exchanged home for hotels where oysters and caviar weren't subject to rationing. One way of defying Hitler was to live it up – "The Ritzkrieg" - by carrying on as they had always done. But it caused resentment.
Packing in the anecdotes, Sweet dots his pages with colourful walk-ons ("Artful Charlie", "Baba Blackshirt") and tantalising vignettes (Dylan Thomas licking gravy from an MI5 girl's legs). His impressive list of interviewees feature Victor Legg, employed for 50 years at the Ritz, Joe Gilmore, Savoy barman who mixed cocktails for Sinatra and stashed whisky for Churchill, and Crown Prince Alexander, born to exiled parents in Claridge's Suite 212, transformed for the occasion into Yugoslav territory.
