The deaths of the veteran Sunday Times correspondent Marie Colvin and the French photographer Rémi Ochlik amid a rising toll of civilian victims in Syria have prompted renewed calls for an end to the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

"Throughout her long career she took risks to fulfil this goal, including being badly injured in Sri Lanka. Nothing seemed to deter her. But she was much more than a war reporter. She was a woman with a tremendous joie de vivre, full of humour and mischief and surrounded by a large circle of friends, all of whom feared the consequences of her bravery."

These cardiac patients can be monitored closely in the observation unit. Other candidates for the unit include patients with kidney stones, dehydration or mild trauma.

Barnes said a typical stay in the unit is about 24 hours. Patients can then be admitted to the hospital or sent home.

On Thursday, Ellen Anthony collected the eggs laid by six of her hens.

Anthony has kept hens - there are now 14 in all and no roosters - in her backyard in a 20-by-20-foot enclosure that includes a small wooden coop for the past 18 years. She's never had a complaint from a neighbor or the city. In fact, a neighbor two doors down keeps chickens as well.

But according to City Planner Harry Smith, keeping chickens is prohibited in New London.

"If it's not expressly provided for in the regulations, then it is prohibited," Smith said Thursday. "It's not provided for in the regulations."

On Thursday night, the Planning and Zoning Commission discussed a letter from Chelsea Ketner of Riverview Avenue, who expressed interest in keeping poultry but wants city approval before going forward.

She's not the only one. Christopher Droesch sent an email Tuesday to The Day to say he had begun collecting materials to keep chickens in the backyard of his New London home only to be rebuffed by someone in the city's Planning, Zoning and Wetlands Department. He attended Thursday's meeting.

Christensen said the regulations prohibit the keeping of chickens in New London.

Droesch said he had relied on section 4-3 of the city ordinance that states no person may keep chickens "in a manner to be injurious to health, create a menace, or offensive to the public."

When he went to get permits to build a coop, a zoning official directed him to section 410.4, subsection 6, of the zoning regulations: "Keeping of not more than three household pets over six months old; the commercial breeding or boarding of pets is prohibited."

Smith said at the meeting that "the commission determined previously that a chicken is not a household pet and therefore they are prohibited."

That's news to Anthony, who also cited the city's ordinance as her legal right to keep poultry.

Two or three years ago, she said, a raccoon got into the coop and "massacred" the chickens. One got away and ran into a neighbor's yard, where a Rottweiler roamed. Bird and 100-pound dog sized each other up, Anthony said, before they became friends of sorts. But the deaths haven't deterred Anthony, who said she's kept chickens for about 22 years. It's an easy way to have good, fresh food in a sustainable manner, she said.

"I like having homegrown eggs, and it makes me go outdoors every day," Anthony said. "I know the weather, the phase of the moon, and I have to take care of the chickens."

Oil change ends in flames

What started as a routine oil change ended with Yonas Bekele's 1993 Lexus bursting into flames at a local Jiffy Lube.

Now, he said, the car is too dangerous to drive unless he spends over $8,500 to make needed repairs -- leaving Bekele without a car to get from Plymouth to his classes at the University of Minnesota.

"I'm exhausted and mad," he said. "I'm having a hard time paying rent. I can't afford another payment."

After the fire broke out during the service, Jiffy Lube replaced some damaged components on Bekele's Lexus. But a spokesman for Heartland Automotive Services, Jiffy Lube's parent company in Texas, said Bekele's request for additional repairs reflected "unreasonable expectations for his older vehicle." The company said, however, that it will follow up to investigate his concerns.

Bekele, 31, is an Ethiopian native who lives in Plymouth and commutes to Minneapolis, where he studies construction management and civil engineering full time at the U. Five years ago, he bought a used Lexus ES 300, which he usually takes to the Jiffy Lube on Campus Drive in Plymouth.

This is where, this is how, Sarah lived her life. From the clouds, she was a faint fleck on the mountainside, a mere human facing nature’s indomitable largeness. The chopper blades whirled back into motion, and Sarah flew high above the mountains, in a race to Salt Lake City. The superpipe lay silent for the rest of the day. A quiet buzz spread through Park City—a chain of rumours, pieces of a story everyone hoped was untrue. It would take nine days to find an ending.

Faced with recurring incidences of mastitis among his herd, Kewaunee County dairy farmer Tony Knorn used a federally funded state program to draw upon the collective knowledge of industry experts to help solve the problem.

Knorn — who owns Junion Homestead Farm with his wife, Peggy, in the town of Luxemburg, and milks about 150 cows — tapped into the Grow Wisconsin Dairy Farm Management Team program.

The program pulls together experts from the field — from livestock specialists and veterinarians, to lenders and dairy equipment manufacturers — to help the state's dairy farmers develop long-term strategies and solutions to help operations thrive in the dairy business, a $26.5 billion industry in the state.

"We probably had eight to 10 people at the meetings," Knorn said last week. "We'd try to come up with an idea of what we thought might be wrong and what we could start to focus on."

The program is offered by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and a joint venture of several agencies including the University of Wisconsin-Extension and state technical colleges

The on-farm team program was started in fall 2009, growing out of a U.S. Department of Agriculture dairy business initiative launched in 2004. It's funded by a mix of federal, state and dairy industry money, said Nicole Breunig, a marketing consultant at DATCP.

The program provides up to $2,000 in cost-sharing to pay for consultant fees and testing related to the topic at hand.

"The program is designed to help farmers look at farm growth, financial success and long-term sustainability," she said. "We wanted a program that was very customizable so a farmer could tap the consultants he needed to work with based on the issue he was experiencing."

So, aside from a robust economy, allow me to vent my own vision on what America needs when it comes to transportation. In my view, based on 39 years in the auto industry and one who has raised a family and is aware of family wants and needs, America needs an automobile that meets all of the following criteria:

A propulsion system that delivers 50 MPG in the city, not just the highway, because that is where most of us drive; plus it more than meets the federal study that says the average daily driving range is 40 miles. Also limits fuel costs to less than $100 per month, even at $3.50 per gallon. Any higher than that and nat-gas should be used without hesitation.

A lightweight body structure that is large enough to accommodate a family of five comfortably, yet enables any choice of propulsion system to be efficient and cost effective, including electric, hybrid, IC engine .

Again, I estimate the size needs are somewhere between a Chevy Cruze, an HHR, a Malibu or a Ford Fusion; the larger the better.

Light weight need not imply less safe, though. Colin Chapman who started Lotus proved this in racing, as he opted to create race cars that were lighter with smaller, less powerful engines, but were equal in safety. Why can’t we do the same? Fact is, we can.

However, ask the steel industry who has a stake in the status quo. Ask the automakers who have already committed millions in manufacturing plants based on the process of welding multiple steel parts. Processing lighter material like aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber simply change the plant dynamics, not to mention the skill sets of unionized workers who are too often reluctant to change their job description.

Fact is, aluminum and magnesium are indeed lighter; and lighter is what gives every propulsion a greater level of efficiency, whether it is an IC engine or an electric drive motor. If there was ever a place for subsidy, it should be in the research and development of larger, lightweight auto body structures and processes.

The public needs and wants cost efficient, safe, affordable vehicles. They are holding onto their cars longer for real, not imaginary reasons. They want their cars as green as is affordable; but that’s the point that gets missed. In order to make green really count in the world, there has to be volume production associated with it; otherwise the green effort is merely a drop in the ocean. And the only way to sell these new efficient cars in high volume is to reinvent the processes so they can be built at a cost that the masses can afford.

Are you listening, especially Detroit automakers? Do not celebrate too much. After all, NAIAS 2012 is nearly over, so it’s time to get back to work. As a geek, he says he watches many movies, from which he often takes ideas.

He took inspiration from the film Inception, which gave him the idea of using magnetic levitation theory to create a gyroscope.

While Chen treats robotics as a hobby, Renmin Univeristy graduate Wang Shenglin treats it as a career.

The 23-year-old finance major didn't search for a job after graduation but rather decided to work full time developing devices at Makerspace.

The Shanghai native has created a 1-meter-multi-touch table that resembles a gargantuan iPad.

While their inventions may attract popular attention - the multi-touch table was spotlighted at this year's Beijing Design Week - most have yet to capture market demand.

The team hosts DIY salons and a book club to brainstorm about the latest technology and its potential. It also plans to organize a carnival next April to encourage more people to try DIY electronics.

London Brokers ‘Throw in the Towel' as Crisis Hits Revenue

Commissions paid to brokerages in Europe may be down 17 percent this year on 2008, according to estimates by Westborough, Massachusetts-based research firm Tabb Group LLC. The regulations have helped to shift trading on to different platforms, raising costs for brokers. By the end of 2009, multi-trading facilities, or MTFs, had taken about 20 percent of all trading in Europe from historic exchanges such as London Stock Exchange Group Plc.

About a third of the turnover in equities has moved into so-called dark pools, algorithmic trading and platforms offering clients direct market access, according to analysts. Credit Suisse said its electronic platform generates about 40 percent of the firm's cash equities business, a figure that will likely increase to 60 percent in the next few years.

Among the larger independent firms, Panmure Gordon warned in November it will report a second-half loss after “severe market turmoil” crimped income from investment banking. Charles Stanley Group Plc said in October earnings will be lower. Arden, which yesterday posted a 5 percent drop in full-year revenue, said the industry faces the “most difficult and challenging conditions since the 1970s.”

“Most of us have had four down years on the trot,” said Panmure's Linacre, who will step down as CEO in 2012. “We are all spending time looking at what the right business model is. We will do what it takes to survive whether that's consolidation or integration.”

Linacre said he expects four or five independent firms will survive. Those that remain will be become larger and more diversified, he added.

“It feels like a mortal battle every single day,” said Numis's Tilbian. “But it's a battle that I want to win. We would love to be one of the last men standing. Once we get to the Promised Land, there will be milk and honey again.”

Comfort food reigns supreme. Meatloaf and pork chops are king. Casseroles (canned tuna or Tatertots) and Jell-O molds (cottage cheese with canned pears or pineapple) are what to bring to wedding receptions and funerals. Everyone loves Red Waldorf cake. I used to be a rider, but I now cook for one of the teams, preparing a fresh meal from local ingredients procured from intelligent farmers -- each possessing all their teeth and digits -- along the way, at every stop along the seven-day ride from the Missouri River to what he calls the "skuzzy river towns" of the Mississippi. If he were to ride with us he might get another, far more positive (and more accurate) picture of Iowa, its people, and its food.

On one such ride, a group of New Yorkers, one of them a first-timer, was riding out of town on the first day. They were explaining, in their thick Brooklyn accents, to the newbie in the group, some things he'd need to know. What stuck out was one caution: "There's somethin' I wanna tell ya 'bout these Iowans. They smile and wave a lot. They don't mean nothin' by it."

The thing is, though, we do mean something by it, whether on that ride, or from the front porch, or even the seats of our pickup trucks. We mean that we care about people and we want them to be safe and happy. We also want them to be well fed, and we do it very well here.
