Helping One Big Client, but Wanting to Spread Out

The Four Horsemen — Chris Dahlberg, H. Eric Mayse, Jim Preziosi and Eric Treadaway — met while working at McFarlane Toys, a maker of action figures. Wanting to create their own line, the four men left McFarlane in 1999 to start their own company.

But creating a toy line, getting it to market and making it profitable can take years. To be successful, action figures generally need a story supported by movies, TV shows or comic books. At the time, Mattel was looking for an outside team with a distinctive design sense. The Four Horsemen pitched the idea of bringing back the Mattel characters He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which had been highly successful in the 1980s. Mattel liked the idea and offered the team a contract. “There was a financial guarantee,” for a year, Mr. Treadaway said. “It allowed each of us a salary.”

The Mattel work kept them busy, but their intent had been to design their own toys. When the second 7th Kingdom figure was ready for production, it was offered for presale over the Internet, and all 1,000 sold out in a few days. But production hit a snag. To manufacture their lines, they had used their industry connections to find small factories in China that could produce the toys quickly and cheaply, a plan that backfired when one of the factories closed before production had finished.

“We paid for production, and it was half-done,” Mr. Mayse said.

The company lost money, but its contacts in China were able to retrieve some molds used in production, and the Horsemen sent the molds to another factory to finish the run. “The fans were great,” Mr. Mayse said. “They stood by for a year and a half,Can't afford a third party merchant account right now? waiting patiently for their figures.”

They had already hired two workers to help with molding and painting, and in 2009, they moved into a larger studio and hired a third employee.

They have also sought to focus on creating content to support their toy lines. In 2008, the men met with a production company, 4Kids Entertainment, about creating an animated television series, a process the four found daunting. They came close to signing a deal, but the financial crisis hit, and the deal fell apart.

“I looked around and thought, This city has such need, we have to figure out a way to have our students become problem-solvers here,” explained Stephen Schock, a professor of industrial design at the College for Creative Studies, an undergraduate and graduate art and design school in downtown Detroit that has redefined its mission in recent years to help the city with economic and community development. “So I started a design activism class,” he said of the curriculum he began offering in 2010.

Update on energy initiatives

On Feb. 9, 2009, the Board of Selectmen voted to establish the Energy Initiatives Advisory Committee (EIAC). The committee consists of five members, each appointed by our board. Qualifications for membership include expertise or interest in energy systems, alternative energy technologies, “green building” design and construction, heating, ventilation and cooling equipment and technologies, energy conservation programs and equipment, and experience in energy or energy-related programs or grants.Daneplast Limited UK are plastic injection mould & toolmaking specialists.

The purpose of the committee is to advise the Board of Selectmen, other town boards and committees, Town Administrator Fred Turkington and Public Buildings Director John Moynihan on all issues related to energy conservation, both from a cost savings and “reducing our carbon footprint” perspective.

Since inception, the EIAC has proven to be a hardworking group of professionals who have looked for opportunities and taken advantage of improvements for the town.

Man chooses new job in Maine over retirement

There is something about Maine that grabs people. I certainly see it in lifetime Mainers, but that spark of Maine fire can be particularly exciting in newcomers.We are passionate about polished tiles. Many people choose to retire in Maine, but today’s story tells of a man who chose Maine instead of retirement.

Rather than retire last summer at age 65, Bill Trumble moved to Maine and took the job of senior vice president of academic affairs at Unity College.

Bill grew up in Washington state. Over the last 40 years, he has studied and worked in schools in Texas, Idaho, New Jersey, New Hampshire and upstate New York, to name a few.

I met with Bill in his office, part of a college building that used to be a chicken coop, and asked him about his new job at Unity College.

“I’ve been in a lot of institutions,” he said. “This one is the best ever!”

Bill is a lifetime lover of the outdoors and an avid believer in responsible environmental stewardship. A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a doctorate in medical physiology have deeply informed his understanding of the natural environment, but Bill’s greatest inspirations come from outside the classroom walls. He has spent time outdoors all his life, including annual wilderness trips that take him all over the world.

Unity College’s work to educate people about that essential connection between humans and their natural environment fits exactly with Bill’s philosophy.

“So much of what we teach here is important to the country and to the planet,” he said.

“No one says, ‘We’ve always done it this way.’ Nothing is taboo; no new thought is off limits when it comes to thinking about how to make Unity a better, more attractive school for environmentalists.”

Knowing it is his “last job” inspires Bill to pursue what he believes in without compromise, and he believes that he is in exactly the right place to do so.

“The environment needs attention. Twenty-three national academies of science agree that climate change is happening; it is real; it is caused by man. Ten years from now, we’ll look back and ask ourselves, ‘Did we do anything when we had the chance?’ We want to leave the Earth in as good or better shape than we got it.”

Gross mismanagement part II B: Furthering the discussion

My last article with this same title was posted on Dec. 1, 2011. That story claimed that the current lack of enough technically competent new employees could be lessened if corporations were willing to provide on-the-job training. That article solicited a perfect storm of replies to the Editor. Fortunately the majority agreed with my conclusions.

However, many rightfully pointed out that corporate greed was only one of many factors contributing to this problem. I was chided for not sharing the blame with universities that refuse to modify their curriculum to adapt to the changing needs of industry. Government regulations and taxes were sited by several readers. Some claim that trade unions have unnecessarily driven wages and benefits to a non-competitive level.

At the same time others believe the plastics industry refuses to pay high enough wages to compete with other industries in securing and retaining the level of employees required by the increasingly complicated processes and equipment. Another pointed out that American corporations are actually spending money to train people in low-labor-rate countries, but not in the U.S.

Many of the replies, but notably S.D.'s, were well thought out. All of these comments coming with different points of view combined to expand my little article into a much more interesting and useful discussion of a topic that was obviously of interest to PlasticsToday readers. It may be presumptuous of me, but I would like to believe that all of these different comments represent the opinions and concerns of what I call the "man-in-the-street" of our part of the plastics industry. I am only sorry that I don't have a vehicle for presenting these opinions and concerns to our politicians and industry leaders.

I sincerely appreciate these replies. Regrettably I don't have the knowledge or time to individually respond to everyone. As a substitute let me leave you with three real-life short stories that address three of your comments.

I owned and ran a company called Glenn Beall Engineering (GBE) for 25 years. That company did plastic product design and development including model making, prototype moldmaking, and the injection molding of preproduction components. With regard to the plastics industry not paying competitive wages, GBE was located close to and half-way between Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. In order to hire employees it was necessary to pay slightly more than the high wages being paid in those two industrialized cities. The company was also half-way between Abbott Laboratories and Baxter Laboratories. Both paid average wages while providing excellent fringe benefits. My little company had a choice. We could have limited our growth and blamed that on not being able to hire enough technically competent people. Or, we could have paid higher wages and provided generous fringe benefits. We chose the later approach and the company prospered. In all fairness, I have to acknowledge that we were not competing with low-labor-rate international companies back in those days.

With regard to universities' failure to prepare their graduates for the available jobs, I once hired a mechanical engineer to work as a product designer.Shop at Lowe's for garage Ceramic tile, He had no experience in designing plastic products, but agreed to learn that technology on the job. After several frustrating weeks he revealed that he had never had a course in drafting. This was well before everything was done by computer-aided design. Then, as now, there is a mismatch between what universities teach and what industry needs.

In the design department we found that the education received by degreed industrial designers allowed them to quickly become productive. We hired graduate engineers with some plastics industry experience; however, it took them much longer to master plastic product design. A WINTER-themed collection of work by Banburyshire artists is displayed in the current exhibition at the Mill Arts Centre, Banbury.

The pieces on display are all produced by members of north Oxfordshire’s artists’ networking group, The Wheel, based at the arts centre.

The show includes paintings, photography, prints, ceramics and digital art in an impressive showcase of local talent.

It features the work of artists from the counties around Banbury and provides the opportunity to buy some unique and delightful Christmas gifts.

Fine art graduate Annabel Windsor is one of the many artists exhibiting her work in The Winter Show. She has two large oil paintings on display which bring the bustle of the city to life.

Brand Beckham meets Brand Qatar

Auburn football: Kris Frost heating up for return

Frost had torn his labrum, a ring of firm tissue around the shoulder socket that helps keep the arm bone in the shoulder socket.

He had been trying to fight off the injury for some time.

“(Team surgeon Dr. James) Andrews said it could have happened as far back as a year ago, back in high school,” Frost said. “Over time, it got worse -- the Shrine Bowl, the All-American game -- it got worse and worse.”

Frost underwent surgery in July to repair his shoulder, and the procedure effectively ended any chance the 6-foot-3, then-215-pounder had of helping Auburn this season.

A rangy, speedy prospect who also spent time at wide receiver in high school, Frost was supposed to shore up an outside linebacker spot that struggled at times. Auburn played 17 freshmen in 2011, the second-most in the country, but Frost was the highest-rated player in the Tigers’ incoming freshman class.

“When we evaluated him, that’s what we thought,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “But we never got a chance to find out.”

“He’s like any guy who is just starting off,” Chizik said. “He shows a lot of glimmers of why we recruited him.”

Frost is happy to be back on the field.

Only one hurdle remains in his return from the injury, a hurdle he hopes to clear before bowl practices end.

“I’m sure next week I’ll be able to put on the pads and go hit,” Frost said. “Oh, my gosh. I haven’t hit anybody since January.”

Rock Creek Canyon Tales

Joe Hernandez leaned his elbows on a picnic table in the Rock Creek Canyon Parkway and lifted his beer for another swallow. It was an overcast November afternoon, and the last of the leaves were still falling from the trees.

He’d watched those trees bud in the spring and saw Twin Falls folks relax under their shade all summer.

The Twin Falls man, dubbed Indian Joe by some of Rock Creek Canyon’s regulars, has frequented the canyon during the past 14 years since the city developed the parkway.

Often spending hours at a time under the trees, Hernandez is a staple of this two-mile trail in the scenic rift that lies between Addison Avenue West and Shoshone Street West — an observer of the people who walk its paved trail, bicycle its hidden hills, or fish its creek. Bedding, old campfires and scattered dishes in a few hidden spots near the trail suggest that people live in the canyon during warmer months.

But this time of year,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, daytime users populate Rock Creek Canyon. They like its seclusion and scenery.

If you think Rock Creek Canyon is a park that’s accessed just west of the old hospital on Addison Avenue West, you’re only partially right.

As Rock Creek cuts across the south and west sides of town, a canyon-bottom trail stretches from Maxwell Avenue to Blake Street. Hernandez’s canyon hangout is on the south side of Addison. It’s often overlooked, because all that passers-by see from the road are thick trees and a nearby sewer plant.

To find the nearest trailhead, drive to the south end of Blake Street and look for a small parking area to the west. Another access point is near the railroad tracks off Shoshone Street South and Maxwell Avenue.

There are, in fact, four access points for the Maxwell-to-Blake stretch of city-owned parkway, said Dennis Bowyer,which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, director of the Twin Falls Parks and Recreation Department.

The city has owned 46 acres inside the canyon since 1978 but developed the paved pathway only in 1997, building the trail over new sewer lines. The city also installed park benches, picnic tables and trash receptacles. “There’s even a little bit of a sprinkler system in there,” Bowyer said.

Despite the city’s efforts to make this a pleasant place for users, its privacy is both a boon and a burden.

“The good thing about the parkway is that it is secluded,” he said. “But that could also present some problems.”

Usually there aren’t many reports of crime in the canyon, said Luke Allen, crime prevention officer with the Twin Falls Police Department, but more calls come in during summer. “We might find someone shooting at rock chucks down there or something like that,” he said. And graffiti is a problem.

Bowyer doesn’t recommend people walk the parkway alone, though that’s what many seem to do.

Hernandez took a breath and folded his arms Nov. 11,ceramic magic cube for the medical, gazing silently beyond the picnic table.

One by one, people passed him on the trail — some of them jogging, others walking dogs. A man raised his arm, and Hernandez waved back.

“Sure, I know him,” he said. “I know a lot of people here.”

Signs posted along the parkway prohibit overnight camping in the canyon. Visitors must leave by sundown.

That doesn’t always happen, though. During the Times-News’ five-week observations in the canyon in November and early December, people often entered the canyon at sundown as journalists were leaving.

That’s not unusual,Why does moulds grow in homes or buildings， according to a woman who rents a canyon-bottom home on private property at the trail’s east end.

“Did you see the caves?” Donna Anderson asked, gesturing beyond the trail’s end. “People live in those caves.”

During Anderson’s seven years in the house, she said, she has seen people carry baseball bats into the canyon, bicyclists crash and homeless people make camp. She’s tried to help the latter by placing wool blankets and sleeping bags outside. She didn’t like it when, she said, police came and took the items away.

“That kind of bothered me,” she said, adding that she’s not encouraging people to stay in the canyon. But they do it anyway, so why not help them?

“We work with the police,” Bowyer said, noting that his department is in the canyon at least once a week from April to October. “Sometimes we get reports of people camping down there, and we’ll have to go down there and make them leave.”

At times, callers have reported people sleeping beneath Old Towne Bridge, Bowyer said, and city workers have found several obvious campsites deep in the canyon foliage, especially near the trail’s Blake Street end.

“A lot of time we get reports of people living under the trees and we go down there and remove them the best we can,” Allen said. “We tell them this isn’t a park for you to stay and sleep in.” Officers often try to help the campers find other places to stay, he said, but many don’t want the help. “They’re used to that lifestyle and just move on.”

Anderson said she’s seen small, jury-rigged huts made from tumbleweeds and other brush. She doesn’t see as many homeless in Rock Creek Canyon during fall and winter, but her heart goes out to them no matter what time of year.

“I know what it’s like to be homeless,” she said. “I was once homeless myself. It was back when I was a young girl, but I still remember what it was like. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

A Christmas of rescuing chickens and cooking collards

A year ago, the six of us still fit into the little log cabin that we moved into in 2009. We bought a tree, and we threaded colored lights through its branches, but our boxes of ornaments and Santas sat unopened in storage. I still feed my old horses twice a day, and I still usually have hay in my hair when I drive my son to high school. My children still go to swim practices and soccer practices and now volleyball practices, too.

I planted a winter garden with collards, even though I don’t know how to cook them.

This weekend, my third son helped me bring out our Christmas decorations. We hung wreaths on the windows and lights on the tree. But the ornament boxes still sit in the middle of the den because the six of us haven’t been home at the same time to share a moment decorating our tree. Each child has a box holding hand-made treasures from preschool and photo ornaments my mother has given them each year. We’ve hung our stockings above our newly lined chimney that we’re now using to help heat the house.

I still try to make dinner for all of us as often as I can. My second son swims for his high school team, so he rarely joins us now. I suspect he’s thankful for his busy schedule since I attempted to cook collards and turnips this week.

“They’re not too bad if you add a lot of salt and vinegar,” my 11-year-old daughter warned her 13-year-old brother who studied the vegetable on his plate.

“Hold your nose, it really helps,” my 17-year-old son advised everyone. “No really, hold your nose.”

Tonight sitting in the connector room between our old and new house, Lily, our orange tabby, is wedged against me on the loveseat. Masters of Venice, at The de Young Museum

These pictures come from the collection of the Gemldegalerie of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. They form of kind of primer to what was being done in the development of new techniques in painting in the 15th and 16th century in Venice, by artists of supreme genius.

Among them are Mantegna, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Bassano and Veronese. Each is a major figure in the passage of Venetian art of the 1500′s, and the examples of each’s work in this show reaffirm his unique importance to that city and its artistic heritage.

Giorgio da Castelfranco, known as Giorgione, often painted figures with such spectral softness that he is acclaimed for his ability to do so. His portrait Youth with an Arrow (1508 – 1510) shows a dreamy boy perhaps in a contemplation of love that includes the irony of being wounded by that love. It is a painting of extraordinary fame, and when you are standing before it, you yourself can wander into a similar contemplation, eased to it by the great beauty of the boy and the wandering of his thoughts.

Tiziano Vecellio’s Portrait of Isabella d’Este, Marchioness of Mantua (1534 – 1536) is a technical tour de force that exhibits what this great master, who was known as Titian, can do to paint objects that have totally unrelated surfaces and qualities. This beautiful woman wears highly decorated, complicated clothing that features fur, velvet, embroidery, and jewel be-decked silk, all of which are treated with exceptional attention to detail and lively accuracy. You could be forgiven for thinking that she is alive before you, and that she is perhaps a little shy of the pleasure that she is giving you. There is an edge of comedy in this picture,This page contains information about molds, too. For me, the star of this show is Tintoretto’s Susanna and the Elders . One tradition in Venetian art of this period is that of painters providing erotic scenes for private viewing by the purchaser and whoever might be alone with him or her at the moment. This is one such, and it is an amazement. In the biblical book of Daniel, Susanna, a young married woman, is bathing in a fantastic garden. Two old magistrates, crazy for her, come to spy upon her and to take in her lovely nudity. Tintoretto’s painting shows the titillating drama with such mad complexity of surroundings that you feel you will be taken away by the swirling beauty of the garden that frames her. But, like the magistrates, you finally cannot take your eyes off Susanna herself. Her skin and hair and, especially, the piece of sheer white cloth with which she is daubing herself are of startling sensual clarity. Also, she is enjoying the view she has of herself in a mirror, a moment of unguarded vanity. She revels in her own beauty.

This exhibit is accompanied by a very fine catalog that gives the viewer short and informative biographies of each of the painters and reproductions of the paintings themselves..

Also — and importantly — the catalog tells of the major changes in painting technique that took place in Venice during this time. Just to name three: the shift from painting on wood panels to painting on canvas, a change that is written about in a fascinating essay by Elke Oberthaler. (You wouldn’t think that a highly technical description of different weaves of canvas and the effect that those differences have on how paint can be applied could be so fascinating. I assure you that, in this essay, it is.); the development of oil painting and the important transition it provided from painting with egg tempera; and the new practice by artists of changing the image directly on the canvas, rather than contemplating all the images beforehand in preparatory drawings.

Injection gets groove back

Here’s a message from people who sell injection molding machines: The joy is back.

Sales have increased for two years in a row, after a steady 10-year decline. That should continue in 2012. The U.S. injection press market is nearing pre-recessionary levels — but it’s not there yet — according to most machinery executives interviewed for this story.

“Right now it’s really fun again in this business. There is life going on again, and people are ordering machines,” said Friedrich Kanz, president of Arburg Inc. of Newington, Conn.

This year, the U.S. market continued its comeback from the dark days of 2009. The story is told in numbers from the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. in Washington. SPI projects 2,400 U.S. shipments in 2011. That would be an increase of about 15 percent from 2,111 in 2010, which was a big jump of 64 percent from 2009 — when just 1,285 presses were shipped.

Many machinery executives credit a resurgent automotive industry for many of the 300-or-so extra presses sold this year. The reason: a slew of new models and the recession-driven culling of weaker molders. The strong survived.

And they’re beefing up technology, said Bob Columbus, sales manager of JSW Plastics Machinery Inc. in Lake Zurich, Ill. “We’ve had an awful lot of fallout over the last decade, but the people who are left are in good shape,” he said.

“The American automotive industry is really coming back strong, and that is really contributing to these very improved numbers,” Kanz said.

Kanz thinks a “normal” U.S. injection press market can reach 2,500-3,000. Press sales fell below the landmark 3,000 level in 2007. A return to 3,000 would give the industry a psychological boost.

And the automotive picture should get steadily brighter, according to a presentation in October at the Fakuma trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, by Michael Taylor, SPI’s senior director of international trade. Citing forecasts from CSM Worldwide, he said North American automotive capacity utilization could go above 90 percent in 2013.

That would spark even more demand for equipment. And machinery officials want President Obama and Congress to extend the accelerated depreciation tax break into 2012, since it helped plastics processors buy machines and modernize this year.which applies to the first offshore merchant account only,

“Automotive is a big driver on the revenue side. They’re the ones that buy all the large-tonnage machines,The application can provide Ceramic tile to visitors,” said Mark Sankovitch, president of Engel Machinery Inc. in York, Pa.

David Bernardi of Ube Machinery Inc. said there are still plenty of aging presses running in U.S. plastics factories.

“From what I see, we’re still looking at pent-up demand. We’re looking at situations on the replacement side. The fleet is still ridiculously ancient, and there are projects for new models of cars,” Bernardi said.

This year, sales increased by 24 percent over 2010 at Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Ube, said Bernardi, senior sales and marketing manager. “The customer base is moving forward and a lot of projects that were back-burnered, they’re saying let’s get them moving again,” he said.

Plastics will play a key role in making cars lighter, to reach the government-mandated 34.1 mpg by 2016 and 54.5 mpg by 2025.

“Automotive is definitely helping the surge of manufacturing,” Sankovitch said. “They’re being forced by the CAFE [Corporate Average Fuel Economy] laws. They’re being creative.”

While some segments are strong, the overall rate of capacity utilization at U.S. plastics and rubber factories has bounced around the 75 percent mark this year. That’s too low to spur widespread machinery sales, said Peter Mooney, president of Plastics Custom Research Services in Advance, N.C. “We can go for quite a while before requiring a new wave of investment in plant and equipment,” he said.

Economist Bill Wood said the pent-up demand that sparked the machinery spike in 2010 has largely been sated. “It’s steadily improving and I don’t see any reason why it won’t continue to gradually improve,” he said. Manufacturing is poised for a major upturn if the U.S. economy begins to hit on all cylinders, he added.

With unemployment stuck at 9 percent, economists are debating how to create jobs. Don’t look to the factory floor, where automated machinery is advancing rapidly, according to Wood.

“Manufacturing does no longer equal jobs. It’s no longer a labor-driven enterprise. Manufacturing is now a technology-driven enterprise,” said Wood, who runs Mountaintop Economics and Research in Greenfield, Mass.

Mobile phones 'don't cause cancer'

Overall, 10,729 people suffered tumours of the central nervous system. When they looked at those with the longest mobile use - 13 years or more - they found cancer rates were almost the same as among non-users.

Daughter Verena has to have therapy twice a week now since her cast is off. She will get an ankle brace that she will wear inside her shoe to help her support her ankle. Communion services were held in our church district last week. There were three new babies in our church and all of them are neighbors to us. Two of the babies are a set of twins, which brings them even more attention. It looks like the mother has her hands full with the twins, a 11/2-year-old son and a 51/2-year-old daughter. The twins are a boy, Lyndon and a girl, Lanette. Our church is having a diaper shower for them and lots of meals are being taken in. It is a big help to the family at such a time.

Silevo unveils hybrid solar cell tech, Chinese factory

Are there still opportunities for tech innovation for solar cells, now that solar panels are rapidly becoming commoditized? California startup Silevo thinks it has a shot with a hybrid solar cell design and a business strategy that involves building its very first factory, not in the U.S. but in China.

Silevo has raised $55 million in venture capital from investors, including three China-based firms: DT Capital (affiliated with Madrone Capital), NewMargin Ventures, and GSR Ventures (connected to Mayfield Fund), said Chris Beitel, VP of business development and marketing at Silevo.

Silevo also claims to have “the industry’s best cost-to-performance ratio” for solar panels,Polycore porcelain tiles are manufactured as a single sheet, but we’ll see if that proves out in the market place. Silevo is in the process of building a 30 MW factory in Hangzhou, China, and expects to bring the factory into full production mode during the first quarter of 2012. The startup does have something novel to offer compared to conventional solar cells, which use silicon to convert sunlight into electricity. Silevo’s technology still uses silicon in part, but it also relies on different materials for other cell components to squeeze more energy out of the system and to improve the cell’s efficiency. The company uses single-crystal silicon as the substrate, the base layer on which it adds a “tunneling oxide layer” and a layer of amorphous silicon to alter the voltage and current of the cells.

“We think this is the first hybrid type of device where we couple all of the three key materials,” Beitel said.

Amorphous-silicon has been used as the main material in solar cells for decades, and plenty of venture capital money has gone into startups to produce solar panels containing strictly amorphous-silicon cells. But amorphous-silicon alone produces far less electricity than cells that use only silicon or even other alternative materials. Applied Materials last year axed a division that launched its first factory equipment for making amorphous-silicon panels in 2007. Beitel was an executive at that Applied division.
