“Stay away long enough when you’re sick. That’s hard to say in this competitive job market that we have and people are afraid of not looking like a good performer,” she said. “But you do want to stay at home. Usually the rule of thumb is you want to be home and fever-free for 24-hours without using a fever-reducing medicine like Tylenol or something.”

Colds are generally less severe than the flu and the symptoms are manageable with over-the-counter medications. Daughter Verena has to have therapy twice a week now since her cast is off. She will get an ankle brace that she will wear inside her shoe to help her support her ankle. Communion services were held in our church district last week. There were three new babies in our church and all of them are neighbors to us. Two of the babies are a set of twins, which brings them even more attention. It looks like the mother has her hands full with the twins, a 11/2-year-old son and a 51/2-year-old daughter. The twins are a boy, Lyndon and a girl, Lanette. Our church is having a diaper shower for them and lots of meals are being taken in. It is a big help to the family at such a time.

Entrepreneur is just a fancy French word for a salesman, and a sales pitch isn't necessarily constrained by the laws of physics or economics. These folks don't so much have a business as an argument -- or a business proposition as the cliche goes. Chris Gronet, the founder of Gronet Industries which became Solyndra and, more recently, defunct, was one such entrepreneur who visited the offices of Scientific American in the fall of 2008.

Much as Gronet's business alma mater Applied Materials has learned to perfect technological processes such as thermal processing at high speed, this entrepreneur had learned to perfect his rapid patter -- and to leave nothing out of place, whether the perfectly parted hair that remained undisturbed by the palpable downdraft of the ventilation system or the thank you e-mail sent the day after the meeting.The additions focus on key tag and impact socket combinations, Like most good, green entrepreneurs, he took a dash of optimism about the bright, clean future for solar energy and paired it with a dose of reality about continuing high prices for the purified silicon at the core of a photovoltaic (PV) device.

Are there still opportunities for tech innovation for solar cells, now that solar panels are rapidly becoming commoditized? California startup Silevo thinks it has a shot with a hybrid solar cell design and a business strategy that involves building its very first factory, not in the U.S. but in China.

Silevo has raised $55 million in venture capital from investors, including three China-based firms: DT Capital (affiliated with Madrone Capital), NewMargin Ventures, and GSR Ventures (connected to Mayfield Fund), said Chris Beitel, VP of business development and marketing at Silevo.

The startup does have something novel to offer compared to conventional solar cells, which use silicon to convert sunlight into electricity. The company uses single-crystal silicon as the substrate, the base layer on which it adds a “tunneling oxide layer” and a layer of amorphous silicon to alter the voltage and current of the cells.

“We think this is the first hybrid type of device where we couple all of the three key materials,” Beitel said.

Amorphous-silicon has been used as the main material in solar cells for decades, and plenty of venture capital money has gone into startups to produce solar panels containing strictly amorphous-silicon cells. But amorphous-silicon alone produces far less electricity than cells that use only silicon or even other alternative materials. Applied Materials last year axed a division that launched its first factory equipment for making amorphous-silicon panels in 2007. Beitel was an executive at that Applied division.

There's one moment in my life that will always be etched on my mind. I was in my late 30s, I'd been using heroin for 20 years and had overdosed for the umpteenth time. This time, I woke up on the kitchen floor with a syringe hanging out of my arm. I realised if that had been the shot that killed me, it would have been my mother who found me. I imagined her seeing me dead on the floor of my horrible flat that hadn't been cleaned for months. I knew that was something she would never be able to get over and it filled me with horror and shame. It was the moment I began to turn my life around.

I had always been a bit of a wild child – I got into the punk scene when I was about 14 and started using recreational drugs such as speed and LSD. I first came across heroin when I was 16. I was at a friend's squat in Islington and someone produced some. I was only too willing to try it. It was unlike any drug I had ever had.

I felt an incredible warmth throughout my body. It was like being in a bubble. Clara Woods makes things more clear and fixes what is damaged. She does art restoration, touching up aged pieces by artists including Charles Russell or contemporary artist’s work that has been torn during transport.

With her own art, she tries to clearly illustrate her view of the world’s beautiful parts as well as its damaged parts. She touches upon religion, poetry and memories depicted figuratively or in landscapes. It leaves me no choice.”

Her “must haves” for restoration are cotton balls, a liquid mixture of her own secret ingredients and brushes with which she gently touches up great works of art. The church has a painting for her to look at. “I get work from word-of-mouth,” she said. “There was a time that I had so much work that I had to refuse calls.”

Woods does not have a computer. Her work takes place the old fashioned way with handshakes and phone calls.

The focal point in her studio/gallery space, 1817 E. Sprague Ave., is a large vintage drafting table she found in a thrift store that serves as an island in the center of the room. She also has a dry mount press that flattens out rolled or creased paper.

Her own paintings decorate the walls. Done in oil, they are a mix of traditional and contemporary; the simple studies of a branch,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, a bone, a spine, a landscape, and a chicken are somehow made mysterious and majestic and her figurative studies are curiously posed.

A new thought-provoking series, reminiscent of paper dolls, are pages from works including the Old Testament cut and torn into silhouettes of a man in a wheel chair or an apple core.

Franklin sludge field may go

About an acre of the field, where sludge from the wastewater treatment plant was plowed under for 28 years, could be used for the city's first solar panel installation on public land. And there's plenty of room for expansion.

Franklin leaders are pushing a proposal that creates a public-private partnership to lease land adjacent to the city's wastewater treatment plant to Nashville-based renewable energy company Energy Source Partners. In turn, the company would install an estimated 900 solar panels on part of the property, which could then be sold to the electric grid through a Tennessee Valley Authority incentive program.

While details are not finalized, Mayor Ken Moore wants the 197-kilowatt arrangement because it won't cost taxpayers and will bring more money — though how much is unknown — to Franklin, where budget cuts have been prevalent in recent years.

"It's a good opportunity for the city, in my opinion, to consider solar as a source for alternate energy to help reduce our electric bills," said Moore, a longtime advocate of solar power. Whether Franklin's project happens now depends largely on final approval from TVA. Franklin has already filed an application to be included in TVA's Generation Partners program, an incentive program that means the authority would purchase solar power for the electric grid at 22 cents a kilowatt hour.

Franklin officials beat a Sept. 16 deadline to be included in the current iteration of the Generation Partners program. Earlier this year, TVA capped the maximum project size from 200 kilowatts to 50 kilowatts, but it will consider projects that were submitted by the deadline.

"It was really intended when it started for small residential systems," said Mike Bradley, TVA spokesman. "They were getting less and less of the incentives."

While solar arrays have grown in prevalence elsewhere, they're scarce in Franklin.the Hemorrhoids pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs.

John Valdes spent about a year trying to make a connection to Mercer University's engineering school, sending letters about his solar energy business to various professors with limited success.

Then, he met a Mercer student who put him on to a new partnership between the college and the College Hill Alliance called the KITE Alliance -- Knowledge Innovation Technology Entrepreneurship.

It's a strategic plan designed to find fledgling companies and act as an enabler for them by offering Mercer's resources to companies that need them. The idea, said Pat Madison, executive director of the College Hill Alliance, is to bring economic development to Macon by attracting companies that will bring 21st century jobs to the College Hill Corridor and downtown Macon, which in turn will either attract new talent to the area or help keep local college graduates here.

The concept fits in nicely with a goal the College Hill Corridor Commission came up with when it first formed: how to keep people in Macon.

"We were having a lot of success in the corridor with housing and lifestyle," Madison said. The KITE Alliance ultimately came out of that same concept.

"Pat and I put our heads together and built the concept," Schultz said. "We had a shared vision where we shared the whole idea of initiating some kinds of business activity with Mercer University serving as a major player."

Cliffard Whitby, chairman of the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, said KITE fills a need in the community.

"What the College Hill Alliance has done is show innovative leadership and has shown the needs in the community," he said. "It relates to thinking outside the box and opens up opportunities that don't exist currently. ... I certainly see this as a key part of future economic development in our community."

Valdes' company, Solar Integrated Products, became the first company to take advantage of KITE's resources.

Valdes said his company's plan is to use existing solar energy technology and make it more portable, versatile and durable. The idea is to help organizations such as the United Nations, the Red Cross and FEMA take solar panels to disaster sites and set them up to generate power.

"But I didn't have a full-fledged machine shop," Valdes said, adding that he also wanted help from the school's faculty and students.

Though still early in the process, so far it's looking to be a perfect fit as Valdes brought in a Mercer student to work part-time for the company.

Schultz said that will be a key part of the strategy, with students from Mercer and other Middle Georgia colleges getting internships and part-time jobs with the startups that could turn into full-time jobs as the companies grow.

Mercer President Bill Underwood said Macon is perfectly placed with its location and resources to attract new, developing companies.

"We have some engines for economic growth if someone wants to take advantage," he said. "We have tremendous transportation access, secure water, excellent health care and a full array of higher education opportunities. We need to find new ways to take advantage of The Medical Center (of Central Georgia) and Mercer University as economic drivers. Hopefully,he believes the fire started after the lift's Wholesale pet supplies blew, as businesses grow, they will begin to provide jobs in the community. And those jobs, Madison said, are what will keep recent and future college graduates in Macon.
