Performance artist helps Immanuel students see big picture

Students at Immanuel Lutheran School had a slight brush with fame Monday.

But here's the catch. None of the students knew what the mural was going to look like until it was assembled after lunch Monday. During the mosaic workshop, students painted on one of 30 individual, 18-inch square canvasses. Working from photos, they replicated the picture on each frame, using only black, white and shades of gray. Each square resembled an abstract painting, with no recognizable images.

Part of the workshop focus is learning art concepts and techniques -- value, contrast, mixing paint and application. The other lesson is spiritual, learning that even with mistakes and imperfection, when working together and helping each other, beautiful things can be attained and accomplished.

Many of the students saw Lewis' performance Sunday at the Performing Arts Center.

"He was pretty awesome," Brandon said.

"The message he had (Sunday) was just phenomenal, and he never said a word," said Ted Voelker, seventh-grade teacher at the school, as he worked alongside many of his students in the cafeteria. "If they can learn to appreciate the witnessing part, as well as the artistic part, then I think they've gained something."

The project helped the students learn to believe and trust in things they might not be able to see and realize their individual strengths, Voelker said. As individual pieces, it might have been hard for students to envision the finished piece, but together, each piece created the whole.

But that was part of Lewis' message as he gave a short talk about church unity and being a part of the body of Christ.

"All they saw was their mistakes," Lewis told the students.

It was difficult for the students to see the big picture, he said.

When assembled, the perceived mistakes seemingly disappeared.

After a resounding "no," Lewis finished with his message: "You don't have to be perfect to show the face of Christ."

The mural, which will be a lasting piece of art at the school, also will teach the students about how God gives them abilities they maybe didn't realize they had, said the Rev. Tim Ritter, associate pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

DaVinci bullish on tile sales

If DaVinci Roofscapes LLC can grow its polymer roofing business a reported 30 percent in last year’s sluggish economy, and have plans to meet or exceed that this year, how much might it grow when the housing market rebounds?

“We’re growing right now in spite of the economy,” said Ray Rosewall, the affable president and CEO of the privately owned company in Kansas City, Kansas.

“We are well-positioned in the marketplace. Once housing starts to come back, you will see explosive growth from us. I expect our sales to double in the next two to three years,” Rosewall said in an interview at the International Builders’ Show, held Feb. 8-11 in Orlando.

The growth of DaVinci’s synthetic slate and shake roofing tiles — which are engineered from virgin thermoplastic olefins and have a 50-year warranty — is taking place in a market whose low-double-digit growth is being primarily driven by asphalt shingles. The firm’s slate tiles are one-half-inch thick — which it claims is thicker than competing products and shows more pattern details.

Rosewall credits the firm’s surge in roofing tile sales to its multitude of colors and custom-color options, investments in more efficient machinery and the popularity of its lower priced, snap-fit Bellaforte slate tiles. The Bellaforte tiles, introduced just two years ago, use 20 percent less material than traditional synthetic and natural slate shingles.

“The Bellaforte line has really begun to take off,” he said. “Its lower price gave us access to a whole new group of roofing contractors, higher volume and more lower-end homeowners.

“The Bellaforte line grew sixfold in 2011,” Rosewall said. He said he believes the line will continue to grow faster than any other product line in the company’s portfolio.

Not only do customers find the Bellaforte slate tiles “more affordable” than competing products, but the product’s price is the same whether they pick from the 49 standard colors or choose a custom color — which they create themselves using a tool on the company’s website, Rosewall said.

“Homeowners are breaking away from the traditional monochromatic blacks and grays on a roof by adding in accent colors and varied shades of colors,” said Rosewall. “It’s a matter of people becoming more educated on roofing color options and feeling more empowered to make personal design statements on their home’s exterior.”

To help in that education effort, DaVinci’s website has a 30-page “Fresh Home Exteriors Colors Guide,An Air purifier is a device which removes contaminants from the air.” written by color-trend forecaster Kate Smith. “Last year, we purchased a new 700-ton Mitsubishi press and two four-cavity stack molds,” which work in tandem to manufacture the slate tiles, he said. With a cycle time of 30 seconds, each four-cavity mold can produce eight parts per minute vs. just four when it used two-cavity molds, Rosewall said. The company now uses two cavities mostly for accessories and smaller-sized products, he added.

“This year, we will spend double what we did last year,” Rosewall said. That investment will be to add an eight-cavity stack mold for 16 parts per minute, which will work with an existing 1,000-ton Husky press, he said.

“With the eight-cavity mold, we can make the tiles much much faster in a very short order,” he said. “When you look at the volume increases we had last year, we needed to make these investments. The new machines will give us a huge advantage in terms of rapid response to orders. If things go as planned, we may add another 1,000-ton press in 2013.”

DaVinci also staffs its molding room 24/7 so changes can be made at any time, he said. The company has also benefited from an initiative over the past two years to build a database and meet face-to-face with architects who specify products for multifamily housing.

Reroofing projects remain the dominant part of business, historically accounting for 70 percent of its sales, but in 2013 that could be as high as 90 percent, he said. “Most of our sales in 2013 will come from remodel and reroof projects. But as new construction markets recover, we expect our ratio of new-to-reroof projects to return to historical levels.”

All roofing waste and unused tiles from projects within 500 miles of Kansas City can be shipped back to DaVinci free of charge. The company encourages contractors to return their tile scraps, unused and used tiles, so they can be repurposed and recycled as starter tiles.

Oxygen purifier fraud targets patients, cops say

A 90-year-old woman was among the area residents who fell victim to a Windsor man who police allege was fraudulently selling medical oxygen purifiers, warranties and service packages.

Essex OPP have charged Dennis Lee, 33, with two counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of fraud under $5,000 and four counts of theft under $5,000.

Lee faces about 20 charges in Windsor and Essex County, mostly for fraud.

In Amherstburg, Lee was arrested for two counts of fraud over $5,000 earlier this month after an 82-year-old Amherstburg man was allegedly defrauded of about $60,000. Det. Sgt. Don Brown of the Amherstburg Police Service said that case does not involve medical equipment and for the sake of the victim, police are not releasing details.

LaSalle police have charged Lee with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and one count of theft under $5,000 in connection with a December complaint over an air purification system.

Windsor police have laid four fraud under $5,000 charges and one mischief charge against Lee.

Windsor police Staff Sgt. Gerald Corriveau of the financial crimes unit said police believe Lee used a sales list from a company that went out of business to befriend seniors and take advantage of them. He said in one case Lee is alleged to have told one of the Windsor victims that he wished he had one of the machines for his sick mother. Earlier this year, Treasure Hill Developments unveiled a townhouse project on Shaw St. near College St. on a site previously occupied by a Catholic school.

The development — a row of faux Victorian-style townhouses meant to mimic the architecture of the neighbourhood — met with a “tepid response,” according to broker Paul Johnston. “After spending a few months marketing the homes, the developer quickly recognized that this wasn’t what a sophisticated downtown market wanted.”

So in October, Treasure Hill decided to overhaul the project and brought on board a new team, including Johnston, principal of Unique Urban Homes, über-urban interior design firm Cecconi Simone, and architect Richard Wengle, one of the city’s top high-end custom home designers.

“We completely re-imagined the development,” Johnston explains “The site remains the same, the number of homes remains the same, but the front architecture and the programming of the homes from an interior perspective has been completely regenerated and is now decidedly modern.”

The re-launched project,Spro Tech has been a plastic module & Mold Maker, Block, is comprised of 37 four-storey freehold townhouses that range in size from 2,650 square feet to 3,700 square feet. The homes have between three to five bedrooms, depending on the plan and how buyers choose to configure their units.

Prices start in the high $900,000s and go up to $1.69 million.

Sales for Block launched in November and more than half of the homes were sold in the first weekend.

As far as Johnston is concerned, the success of the redesigned project is a testament to the demand in the city for at-grade contemporary housing.

Interiors at Block include 10-foot ceilings on the main floor and nine-foot ceilings on the second and third floors. Bathrooms have oversized glass shower enclosures with rain-soaker showerheads, a soaker tub,porcelain floor and wall tiles and Corian sink and countertop.

The wood-frame townhouses — which feature staggered facades and wide windows in front — are clad in a combination of pre-cast concrete, masonry and stucco, with metal accenting. They also have balconies and flat roofs with skylights.

While Wengle is well known for designing luxury custom homes in high-end neighbourhoods such as Forest Hill and Rosedale, Johnston says the architect — “a modernist at heart” — was keen to work on a contemporary project like Block.

“Although his practice has been in much more traditional work in the last number of years, this is a direction that Richard is very excited to be moving in because it’s really where his roots are.”

As a result, Johnston says, buyers at Block get the custom home look at a fraction of the cost of a Wengle one-off project.

Each home at Block has a private terrace, back-door entrance and a single-car garage that can be accessed from the rear laneway.

Parliament's six-month repair job

While a lot of people will be busy this month working on new year's resolutions to get fit and healthy, people working on Parliament Hill have been locked out of their main fitness centre since last summer.

The five-year-old gym lets anyone who works on the Hill use it basically free of charge -- everyone from political staffers to those providing maintenance and security support to journalists in the press gallery. There's a one-time $25 user fee and then the fitness centre is accessible, other than when it's closed an hour a day for cleaning, all day, every day.

It was initially closed for repairs near the end of June and expected to re-open by the end of August. Then another notice went out extending the closure until October, followed by a notice extending the closure until December. The latest notice went out Dec. 22, extending the closure by a further two weeks. What was expected to be a six-week repair job is now at 25 weeks, or about six months.

Looks like the East and West blocks aren't the only parliamentary buildings on a delayed repair schedule.

A spokesman for Public Works and Government Services Canada says the fitness centre was closed to replace tiles in the showers.

"Tiles located along the lower walls in the shower stalls are breaking away and need to be replaced. PWGSC is replacing all the one-inch [2.5 cm] mosaic tiles the bottom six inches [15 cm] of the stalls, and replacing them with larger two-inch [5 cm] tiles," Sebastien Bois wrote in an email.

Bois says the repair schedule was deferred so a design engineer could do a secondary review of the repair plan, confirm the source of the problem, and ensure "the chosen solution would be long-lasting.A mold or molds is a hollowed-out block that is filled with a liquid like plastic,"

Amoeboid yellow slime mold has been on Earth for thousands of years, living a distinctly un-hi-tech life, but, say scientists, it could provide the key to designing bio-computers capable of solving complex problems.

Toshiyuki Nakagaki, a professor at Future University Hakodate says the organism, which he cultivates in petri dishes, "organises" its cells to create the most direct root through a maze to a source of food.

He says the cells appear to have a kind of information-processing ability that allows them to "optimise" the route along which the mold grows to reach food while avoiding stresses -- like light -- that may damage them.

"Humans are not the only living things with information-processing abilities," said Nakagaki in his laboratory in Hakodate on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.

"Simple creatures can solve certain kinds of difficult puzzles," Nakagaki told AFP. "If you want to spotlight the essence of life or intelligence, it's easier to use these simple creatures."

And it doesn't get much more simple than slime mold, an organism that inhabits decaying leaves and logs and munches on bacteria.

"Computers are not so good at analysing the best routes that connect many base points because the volume of calculations becomes too large for them," Tero explained.

"But slime molds, without calculating all the possible options, can flow over areas in an impromptu manner and gradually find the best routes.

"Slime molds that have survived for hundreds of millions of years can flexibly adjust themselves to a change of the environment," he said. "They can even create networks that are resistant to unexpected stimulus."

Research has shown slime molds become inactive when subjected to stress such as temperature or humidity changes. They even appear to "remember" the stresses and protectively become inactive when they might expect to experience them.

Tero and his research team have successfully had slime molds form the pattern of a railway system quite similar to the railroad networks of the Kanto region centering Tokyo -- which were designed by hard-thinking people.

He hopes these slime mold networks will be used in future designs of new transport systems or electric transmission lines that need to incorporate detours to get around power outages.Ventilation system

Masashi Aono,molds a researcher at Riken, a natural science research institute based in Saitama, says his project aims to examine the mechanism of the human brain and eventually duplicate that brain with slime molds.

"I'm convinced that studying the information-processing capabilities of lower organisms may lead to an understanding of the human brain system," Aono said. "That's my motivation and ambition as a researcher."

Aono says that among applications of so-called "slime mold neuro-computing" is the creation of new algorithm or software for computers modelled after the methods slime molds use when they form networks.

"Ultimately, I'm interested in creating a bio-computer by using actual slime molds, whose information-processing system will be quite close to that of the human brain," Aono said.

"Slime molds do not have a central nervous system, but they can act as if they have intelligence by using the dynamism of their fluxion, which is quite amazing," Aono said. "To me, slime molds are the window on a small universe."

President Cristina Kirchner's emergency surgery for thyroid cancer puts a spotlight on her vice president, Amado Boudou, a guitar-playing former economy minister who will run the country for at least three weeks in January during her hospitalization and convalescence.

In the campaign leading up to Mrs. Kirchner's landslide October re-election, the telegenic Mr. Boudou's penchant for partying with rock stars and other celebrities often overshadowed his policy ideas.

But analysts say the leftist Mrs. Kirchner brought Mr. Boudou onto the ticket precisely because he lacked the political heft within the ruling Peronist party to emerge as a potential rival to her. Now that Mrs. Kirchner will be forced to retreat from the political stage for at least a few weeks after surgery next Wednesday, she is probably relieved to have chosen Mr. Boudou, analysts say.

Earlier this year, after she announced her plans to run for a second term, Mrs. Kirchner said the main reason she picked Mr. Boudou as her running mate, over some powerful Peronist governors, was his "loyalty."

Christmas comes with good news and many Christians use it to reflect on their past and lay strategies to live a better future. The way this happens is miraculous because both the happily living and those who are burdened perceive Christ as the saviors.

Last Thursday as the country was busy preparing for Christmas, a chain of inmates at Luzira Upper Prison saw light and decided to abandon their tainted past. They sought the sacraments of baptism and confirmation.

A total of 15 convicts were baptized and 49 confirmed. Among those who received confirmation were five inmates on death row. But amidst the challenge of being in jail the inmates wore beaming faces and sung praises with vigor, like they were possessed by the Holy Spirit.

They gave several testimonies on why they had decided to receive Christ. The theme of their messages was life without him was like being beautiful but badly behaved.

Robert Ojara a 35 year old death row inmate said that he wanted to get baptized because he had learnt a lot while in jail and feared that he wouldn’t get a chance even if released to receive the sacrament since there were no worship centers on his village in northern Uganda.

“By the time I was jailed I had started understanding the importance of God, but the Lord’s Resistance Army war had ravaged my village and there was no chance for me to get baptized. This is the chance I have to embrace Christ,” Ojara said. The other inmate, Simon Kiyemba 18, on remand over allegations of defilement said that he lost his parents before he was baptized and saw this as an opportunity to embrace Christ.

Like anyone preparing for the birth of Christ, the inmates were smartly dressed in their yellow uniforms and white for convicts on death row donned rubber shoes locally known as Nigina. Chickens can flock to the city

Some officials clucked over the potential for smelly or runaway birds, but the Concord City Council last night voted to let residents keep small flocks of chickens in their backyards.

It's a pilot program for now. The council made the backyard-chickens law a 21-month pilot that should come back to the council for review in September 2013, a motion by Ward 7 Councilor Keith Nyhan that was adopted on a voice vote.

The $1.34 million surplus came out of a city budget in fiscal 2011 that contained $48.5 million in general fund spending. The city reported a $1.39 million budget surplus in fiscal 2010 and a $724,000 surplus in fiscal 2009.

Also last night, councilors sent a request from Northeast Delta Dental to rezone 1.4 acres off Commercial Street, just north of Horseshoe Pond, back to the planning board for additional review.

COJO Gala a big success

If you missed the 17th annual Children Of Jamaica Outreach (COJO) Gala held at the La Guardia Plaza hotel in Queens, New York, on Saturday, December 3, then you would have missed a fantastic event.

Judging from all the fun that patrons had, it was evident Jamaicans living in the Big Apple know how to throw a great party while doing good.

Since the inception of COJO in 1994 by Gary Williams, a Jamaican living in the United States, the programme's purpose is to improve the lives of needy children in Jamaica and the United States. In an effort to improve these children's lives through education and health care, COJO hosts an annual fund-raiser gala. This year was no different, except friends of COJO make an effort to dig a little deeper in their pockets and as the organisation gets more recognition, more entities are inclined to offer their support.

It's the winter in the Big Apple, and despite the cold weather, patrons came out dressed to the nines in their coats, sporting fabulous gowns, high heels and dapper suits underneath. The evening began with cocktails and in true Jamaican style, patrons enjoyed some cocktail patties complemented by barbecue wings and assorted fruits.

Galas can be quite stuffy and boring but that was not so with the COJO event. People came out to have a good time and that is exactly what they did. MC Reverend Calvin McIntyre kept the room in stitches most of the night. The guest speaker, Ambassador Burchell Whiteman, gave a splendid speech. Food the biggest need after Alberni apartment fire

The Salvation Army has been overwhelmed with donations from the community at large for 56 people who lost their homes in the Athol Street apartment fire last week. So much so that Capt. Neil Wilkinson has asked people to stop bringing donations.

"The big story today is ¡®stop'," he said Friday afternoon. The gymnasium at the Salvation Army compound had been empty at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and by Friday it was overflowing with donations of clothing, furniture, bedding, linens toiletries,you will need to get an offshore merchant account. toys, books and even pet food.

Volunteers were dropping in to the facility in such high numbers that the Salvation Army couldn't keep up with registering them properly.

"We can't handle any more," Wilkinson said. "We've got all the product that we need, but now we've run out of food."

He said the food bank was taxed to the max in order to provide food to those who lost everything in the fire. Now, they don't have enough food to fill their regular hampers.

"We were getting low as it was, but when the displacement happened that just tipped us over the edge."

No cause found yet

The Port Alberni Fire Department has finished with the burned out building and turned it over to the insurance company and the owner, deputy fire Chief Chris Jancowski said. The fire department is working with the RCMP to figure out how the building burned.

"We were able to get into where we needed to safely and securely and examine areas we had interest in," Jancowski said.

Port Alberni RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Murray said the investigation will take some time to complete as there were so many residents to interview, and now persons of interest as well.

Murray said investigators haven't been able to establish any cause for the fire yet, except that there was no evidence of the fire being electrical or "non-criminal" in nature.

I love that many bars are trading out their bottles and taps of Bud and Miller for the likes of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Rogue. The craft-beer wave has definitely arrived in Central Florida.

I recently stopped by the brand spanking new Taps Wine & Beer Eatery (it opened three weeks ago) in Winter Park Village. Like World of Beer and Draft, Taps is looking to bring crafts to the masses.you will need to get an offshore merchant account. This is great, but quantity does not equate quality (in service).

With 350 beers in house plus 28 on draft (half of which rotate out regularly), Taps has an expansive and impressive list of beers. But Taps doesn't stop there. Unlike WOB, Taps also has a large wine and liquor selection. Wine dispensers line the rear (and totally enclosed) section of the bar. They hold 48 wines, with another 12 behind the bar for happy hour. The front room of the bar has an inside-out feel with large garage doors opening the space to the outside.

Those wine and beers can also be married with top-shelf liquors for unique cocktails that include the Red Goose (a mixture of Grey Goose Vodka,buy landscape oil paintings online. If you're pushing this kind of menu it's nice to have folks on staff who love the beer or are as knowledgeable about it as the folks ordering it (take a note from local bars Redlight Redlight and The Abbey). Our server came back and pointed out the sours on the menu. I went with a Duchesse De Bourgogne, or as I called it "my bourgy beer." The price ($9.50) lived up to the pretentious name.

The hubby ordered a Woodchuck Hard Cider, which was on the menu, only to be told it wasn't in stock yet. So he ordered a Left Hand Milk Stout at $5.50, not a shocking price for Winter Park. Both beers were delivered in bottles, only one came with a glass. A more experienced server would have known to bring a glass with both beers and offer to pour the drinks.

This can all be remedied in time considering the bar hasn't had its grand opening yet  it's scheduled for June 25. This is Taps second location (the first is in Tampa with another on the way in St. Petersburg), according to owner James DeVito.

Once the staff is trained (or true beer lovers are hired), beer education nights are planned and wine and beer pairings are in the works. I do dig the look of this place.
