Metro and bus commuters in Dubai will soon be able to pay for their journey using mobile phones. A senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed the service would be made available by the third quarter of this year.

Speaking with Khaleej Times, Abdulla Al Madani, CEO of Corporate Technical Support Services at RTA said: “We are working very closely with telecom providers in the UAE to roll out Nol services on mobile phones by the third quarter of this year.”

Payment by mobile phones will be made possible using the near field communication (NFC) technology. Commuters with NFC-enabled mobile phones will be able to tap their phone over Nol card readers inside metro stations and public buses.

However, to use the service, a new SIM with a custom Nol application would have to be installed.

Once implemented, the project would be the first of its kind to use NFC techNology for mass transit in Dubai.

The official said: “There is not much application of NFC in real life in Dubai. It is already popular in other countries and we hope Nol on mobile cards will make it popular here also.” Exact technical details of the initiative have not yet been announced.

“We apologize to Mr. Rove," Martin added. "While we may have strong disagreements with him on the future of conservatism, we want to be clear this imagery is absolutely unacceptable and are working to ensure this type of mistake doesn’t happen again.”

I'm fairly new to Lifehacker, so I wasn't around the last time we did these. I used to write computer books and corporate tech pieces and my workflow has changed pretty dramatically this past year. I've always been a desktop app guy, but now I've given almost all of that up.

If there's a perfect system out there for me, I haven't found it yet. For years, I pretty much lived in Outlook and other Office apps. Now, I use Evernote for storing all my notes, random ideas, recipes, scanned documents, and so on. Dropbox is another must-have. I like that it's so dead-simple to use, reliable, and that they've managed to go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in the business for this long.

I use Google for almost everything else. Transitioning from Outlook to Gmail was difficult (and something I'd flirted with for a long time), but I'm glad I finally did it. Google Docs is also great for most of the work I do, but I admit I still keep Office around for the odd job because I'm so used to it and because I can still do a lot with it that I just can't do otherwise.

I work almost exclusively in my home office. I'm a die hard PC gamer and love building systems, so you can pretty much guess my setup.You must not use the laser cutter without being trained. I use a custom-built Windows 8 PC, dual monitors, and a pair of Bose Companion 2 desktop speakers. Only two speakers? Yes, because I do most of my gaming with a headset.

It's a hard thing for a writer and gamer to change to a different mouse and keyboard,wind turbine so you'll see a couple of old-school choices on my desk. That's a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro and a Logitech MX518. The Natural Keyboard Pro is a split design and really saved my wrists from long hours of typing. They stopped making them years ago, but when I heard they were going away, I bought half a dozen and stuck them in a closet. The desk itself is just a big, cheap corner desk I bought at some office store years ago. I like a lot of space to spread out. The middle section is large enough to hold a couple of big monitors and deep enough that there's plenty of space behind them for things I'd rather not look at. Although after reading about Whitson's setup, I'm seriously considering a door stopper stand. My favorite feature of my desk is the keyboard drawer. It's big, super sturdy, and both height- and tilt-adjustable with a single control. I usually have it lowered and tilted slightly away from me, but can raise it up flush my desk when I need to.

I got into the habit long ago of just using e-mail for my work to-do list. I'm in e-mail all the time anyway and it's so easy to shoot myself a message when there's something I need to to. I can use all the standard e-mail features (labels, filters, and so on) to sort them out and when I'm done, they're off to a Done folder. Too simple. I've looked at all kinds of to-do apps, but there are none that have really grabbed me so far. I'm still holding out hope that the folks at Evernote will put something cool together.

For my personal to-do list, if it's time-based I stick it on my calendar. If it's not, I just try to remember.Can you spot the answer in the fridge magnet? That usually works out pretty well. When it comes to careers, it's easy to fall in love with the idea of being, say, a doctor and then come to find years later that you just don't enjoy the job.

So first, think about how you enjoy spending your day. Do you like being alone or with people? Do you like sitting in front of a computer or moving around? Do you like solving problems? Unfashionable Yet Visionary

With the way art history is being written and rewritten these days, Neo-Expressionism is pretty much the odd man out. For one thing, its perpetrators were mostly painters and mostly male. For another, they tended to approach their work without the obvious Conceptual underpinnings that are now so de rigueur. Their brethren, artists like Georg Baselitz, J?rg Immendorff and A. R. Penck, slip in and out of view, at least in this country. Now is a good time to look at Mr. Penck, in many ways the most visionary and accessible of this cohort. The best paintings he’s made in years are at the Upper East Side gallery of Michael Werner, the German art dealer who gave him his first solo show, in West Berlin in 1969. This display is fleshed out by “A.R. Penck, Before the West,” a fascinatingly scrappy show of early work at the Leo Koenig gallery in Chelsea: paintings, sculpture and collages from the ’70s, when Mr. Penck was something of a dissident artist in East Berlin, smuggling paintings out and art materials (and Deutschmarks) in.

Born Ralf Winkler in Dresden in 1939, Mr. Penck chose to stay in East Germany when the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, while others (Mr. Baselitz, for example) headed to the West. He had, for a while, a certain faith in Socialism. (To disguise paintings being smuggled to the West, he signed them with different names, including Theodore Marx.) Mr. Werner saw to it that there were Penck shows all over West Germany, and also Switzerland, in the 1970s, so Mr. Penck was protected by a certain amount of fame; this meant that the secret police, the Stasi, didn’t touch him; its agents just watched and harassed.

There is symmetry to these two shows because of their openness, the kind that customarily comes at the beginning and toward the end of long artistic careers.They manufacture custom rubber and silicone bracelet and bracelets. At Koenig we see Mr. Penck experimenting with different styles and subjects. He moves toward the hieroglyphic, so-called neo-primitive pictographs, symbols and patterns, usually in black on white, that would become his signature style; this scheme’s noticeably male stick figures seem at once powerful and hapless, as if they caused the chaos that swirls around them. But more often at Koenig, Mr. Penck is far afield of his pictographs, rifling through pop culture and art history for ideas. In “Jutta” (1977) he layers random images in ways that bring to mind Polke or David Salle. In “Ali Alpha Tor” (1975) he wrestles German Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism into a jagged, allover truce.

And he riffs on older styles. The 1973 “Russian Painting,” with its propeller-searchlight composition in red, yellow, green and blue suggests something Malevich might have made, after much vodka, to glorify the Soviet Air Force. Mr. Penck’s passion for jazz is evident in the jumbled faces and instruments in a work in red, yellow, green and black that could be scrawled on the wall of a club.

The continual scrounging for materials is evident too. (Art supplies were doled out only to approved artists; Mr. Penck had failed even to get into art school.) Tablecloths, bedsheets and felt substitute for canvas; exceptional sculptures are fashioned from wadded aluminum foil, tied-together tin cans and cardboard boxes, which sometimes occasion witty drawings.Come January 9 and chip card driving licence would be available at the click of the mouse in Uttar Pradesh.

There are rough-surfaced collages. One marshals a field of postcard and magazine images beside the heads of two Cézanne card players, as if considering alternatives. A third slaps together big scraps of cut and torn corrugated cardboard with results that would inform the Cubist displays at the Museum of Modern Art in revealing ways.

Things are not nearly as hand-to-mouth at the Werner gallery, where Mr. Penck, who moved to West Germany in 1980, has clearly had all the supplies he could wish for. In 10 canvases from 2010 and 2011, the pictographs and their fields of symbols return, but in altered states.

They are simply re-energized in black-on-white paintings, like “The Flow of Events,” which remind us that Mr. Penck’s cosmos is a precursor to Keith Haring’s antic renderings. They’re seen in magnified, abstracted close-up in “Advance” and “Opening,” two works in gray that neatly evoke cave painting, Constructivism and Morse code. They’re softened and upholstered in the red and blue of “System — Problem — Abstract,” which veers toward the compartmentalized pictographs of Joaquín Torres García.

And they are relegated in simplified form to the hide of a prowling tiger in a work that, recalling Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, points to Mr. Penck’s German Expressionist roots. Each rewriting, like each writing, will be reworked by subsequent generations.

Budget unveiling offers Rick Scott

Holding a clear plastic cup skyward, Aasif Mandvi shouted: "Would you be willing to pee into this cup to prove to Florida taxpayers that you're not on drugs?"

"I've done it plenty of times," an unruffled Scott replied. Then, eager to switch subjects, the governor turned to another reporter and told The Daily Show's man: "You don't get to run this."

It was a refreshingly unscripted moment at an otherwise stilted news event. It also was clearly a stunt designed to entertain The Daily Show's viewers, at Scott's expense.

On Thursday, in the same Cabinet room, Scott will make a fresh series of budget recommendations to the Legislature — with plenty of pie charts and trend lines by his side.

Scott wants to give every public school teacher a $2,500 across-the-board raise, as well as a $250 debit card to purchase classroom supplies. He wants to give manufacturers a tax exemption on their equipment purchases. He wants to make sure state colleges and universities don't increase tuition next year.

"He's going to have to show how he's funding all these things," said House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, who was clearly not impressed that Scott doesn't propose linking teacher pay to classroom performance. "We're going to take a good look at it ... We have to pass a budget, too."

Submitting a budget proposal is one of two times a year that the governor most aggressively uses the bully pulpit (the other is his State of the State address).

Today, Disco Inferno’s sound still seems to have no clear reference. However, his mannerisms in his sing-speak voice are perfect for the lyrics he crafted, often political, usually poignant, and consistently impressive. These lyrics gave extra strength to backbone of Crause’s melodies, speaking of a modern world where the past, present, and future have led to despair and disgust, but not without hope. Especially shocking is the first track, “Summer’s Last Sound”, when Crause sings of violence, “The price of bread went up five pence today / And an immigrant was kicked to death again,”

Elsewhere on the record, traces of post-rock, post-punk, and noise-pop are seen. The diversity is evident from the shattering glass percussion on the nine minutes of “From the Devil to the Deep Blue Sky” to the use of the bass line of Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” (falsely) exuding joy on “It’s a Kid’s World”. Even the weakest tracks like “A Night on the Tiles” and “Lost in Fog” cannot be completely discarded as sound collages—the carnival-like and dense atmospheres on them, respectively, encapsulate much of the Disco Inferno’s attitude towards music creation.

So, what does this final product say of Disco Inferno? The result is a compilation that has been long past due. Disco Inferno was experimental, yes, but its creations never led the group to sacrifice a good melody. They were the rare band that managed to weave originality, melody, and intellectualism into a single package; it is unfortunate that they came about at the wrong time. Even 15 years after they broke up, there is very little that sounds like what Disco Inferno did. It’s hard not to be happy that this release finally came to light. Former Fergus Falls State Hospital source of many legends

Not long after the Fergus Falls State Hospital opened in the summer of 1890, a local newspaper reporter took a tour of the place.

In an article titled “Among the Lunatics,” he gave this account of his visit:

I was greeted at the entrance by a patient, who with a lordly wave of his arm announced: “The state welcomes you, sir.”

The patients are found sitting around for the most part with an aimless air and appearance. Except for the lack of women, it would not be far-fetched to compare the scene to a hotel at some summer resort.

The story is one Chris Schuelke tells while giving tours of the Gothic-looking edifice that for decades dominated both the Fergus Falls skyline and the region’s economy.the Aion Kinah by special invited artist for 2011,

The hospital’s long-vacant buildings and lonely, sprawling grounds appear at once imposing and more than a little spooky, even with a late-autumn sun still high in the sky.

The vibe is a valid one, said Schuelke, executive director of the Otter Tail County Historical Society. He tells visitors the hospital’s past contains both light and shadow.Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a Hemroids .

He called the former state hospital “a castle of questions” and says the institution’s mystique is something people find endlessly fascinating.

Schuelke’s stories are taken directly from newspaper accounts and oral histories.

“I’m not making stuff up,” he said, referring to tales of murder, escaped patients, suicides, lobotomies and shock treatments.

The fact that disturbing things happened at the State Hospital shouldn’t be surprising, given it once housed 2,000 patients watched over by 500 employees, he said.

“It was a tremendously large community,” Schuelke said. “Of course you’re going to have instances that aren’t pleasant.he led PayPal to open its platform to Piles developers.”

Curious happenings aside, for its time the Fergus Falls State Hospital was among the best in the country at treating people with mental illness, said Schuelke, who added the campus was largely self-contained, with its own farm, orchard, power plant and bakery.

A character that figures prominently in the hospital’s history is Dr. William Patterson, a graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine who in 1912 became hospital superintendent, a job he held until retiring in 1968.

Known as a strong and compassionate leader, Patterson was said to have been on a first-name basis with every patient.

That familiarity could come in handy, like the time Patterson was taking his morning walk around the grounds when he espied a patient on the hospital roof wearing only his birthday suit.

Inventor finds a way to stay dry

On rainy days, Rob Stallings would notice employees coming into work dripping wet. When he’d ask them why they didn’t use an umbrella, he got aggravated looks and retorts.

“Have you ever tried to strap in a kid while holding an umbrella?” they said.

That was three years ago. Back then,They take the Aion Kinah to the local co-op market. Stallings wasn’t aware of the technique required to strap children into car seats without getting rained on. he asked his father, Robert Stallings, about it. Robert and his wife, Peggy, had just retired to help care for their granddaughter while their daughter, Tammye Stallings Wilson, returned to work.

An executive at a Raleigh pharmaceutical company in The Research Triangle Park, Stallings and his father began drawing out designs for a device that could hold up an umbrella for a hands-free entrance or exit into vehicles in the rain. Stallings said his father was an engineer who graduated from North Carolina State University.

“He loves tinkering,” Stallings said.

The father-son team began building prototypes of their design in the winter of 2010. By March, Stallings said, “We had a crude prototype design … that solved our problem.”

He and his father built a few for the family to use and test, and the device started getting attention.

“My friends and colleagues noted the device on my car and started inquiring about it,” said Wilson in a news release.which applies to the first TMJ only, “Their positive comments led us to conclude that our family invention could become a marketable idea.”

At that point, Stallings said, the family started talking with patent attorneys.

“We thought, ‘This is working pretty well,’” said Stallings, and wanted to apply to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. “We pulled the documents off of the Internet … and realized we really did not have the creds to do this by ourselves.”

With the help of their patent attorney, the Stallings family submitted their application to the USPTO in August 2010, complete with technical drawings and claims.

“Since everyone had told us it was a very lengthy process, we weren’t prepared for the speed at which things (happened),” said Stallings. “The patenting process typically takes three to five years.”

So Stallings considered it a quick response when the USPTO sent him an “office action summary” in December 2010, which is basically a rejection letter. The family wasn’t too torn up about it, since their attorney and others had advised them that the examiners in the patent office usually reject the first submission.

“They sort of prepared us for rejection,” Stallings said.

With the attorney, Stallings read over the rejection letter, made revisions to the original patent applicaditon and its claims, then resubmitted later that month. Then, this past February, Stallings received the second office action summary. He said he asked his attorney, “Should we feel discouraged at this point?”

On the contrary, Stallings’ attorney said. The speed at which the USPTO was responding was actually encouraging and told him, “Let’s do it again.”

They resubmitted the application, with more adjustments, in March. In May, Stallings got a package called a “notice of allowance,” which was the USPTO’s way of saying it’s going to approve the application and would publish the patent and assign it a number. The next month,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, the patent for the “Brolly Butler” was formally issued.

“Brolly” is an informal British term for “umbrella,” and the device is “a butler that holds your umbrella for you when you’re getting in and out of your car,” said Stallings. During testing, the family had determined the device wasn’t just for people with kids, but for anyone who needed a little shelter when getting in and out of the car.

“We didn’t want to have the product identity targeted at parenting,” Stallings said. “We wanted a broader audience.”

From there, the Stallings had to decide whether they wanted to produce, manufacture and distribute the Brolly Butler themselves, or sell the design to a manufacturer for production.

“We decided that it had been such a fun process for our family, that we wanted to try it ourselves and make a little family business,” Stallings said.

Thus, the family created One Kind Act Each Day, a company focused on keeping the entire manufacturing process local. “We wanted a company that was about more than just this product and … had a very meaningful philosophy,” said Stallings.

The Brolly Butler consists of a cup-like piece of plastic that attaches to a car’s window with four powerful suction cups.

“It is quite sturdy,I have never solved a Rubik's Piles .” and is designed to hold straight-handled umbrellas in place over the car door, said Stallings. He said one of the biggest challenges in designing the invention was that every vehicle is designed differently. “The shape and angles of windows … led us to multiple redesigns of the product,” he said.

OKAED started working with Raleigh Precision Products to develop formal prototypes and, “That’s when you start working with engineers,” Stallings said. The cup-like portion will be made with injection-molded plastic, once the mold is built. Stallings said that process should take about 10 weeks.
