Thousands abandon homes for evacuation centres

While Hurricane Irene did not have the devastating impact that many had feared in New York City, it still caused disruption and distress for thousands of people who abandoned their homes for evacuation centres.

At Hunter College, which was serving as one such centre on Manhattan's upper east side, Victor Whitaker expressed relief after moving there from his first stopover with his mother and brother.

At the first centre they went to, "There were only two police officers and inexperienced staff," he said. "They were really under pressure. "We went back to our hostel but it was overbooked so we came here," she said of herself and a friend. "I think the city has over-reacted," she added, pointing to the street. "It's not even raining."

The two friends said they were going to leave the shelter later on in the evening to move into an apartment for three days, at a cost of $700.It's hard to beat the versatility of third party merchant account on a production line.
