An inside look at B.C.'s never-used solar panel plant

United Solar Ovonic opened up its unused Battle Creek site Monday in the hopes of finding another manufacturer to take over the property.

The 267,600 square foot building in the Fort Custer Industrial Park was built in 2008, but the hundreds of jobs making solar panels never materialized. The worldwide economic downturn and increased competition from China lowered demand for United Solar's products and forced the company to backpedal on its plans for Battle Creek.

Now United Solar is working with Battle Creek Unlimited and the commercial real estate firm Signature Associates to find a new owner for the 45-acre property at 10 N. Clark Road. Representatives from all three firms were at the property Monday morning to give anyone interested a look around.

The asking price for the United Solar site is $7.95 million.

John Boyd of Signature Associates said the firm is marketing the property regionally and outside of the state.

"We're obviously targeting the alternative energy sector," he said. Boyd said there's already been some interest in the property, but he wasn't expecting much activity before spring.

Inside the vast open space where lines of workers were once expected to assemble solar panels, large pieces of unused equipment sit surrounded by pristine cement floors and white walls.

Gary Di Dio, United Solar's director of operations engineering services, said the company's equipment could be removed in a matter of weeks.
